Quick answer

What does an AEO agency in South Africa do for AI search?

An AEO agency South Africa brands hire for AI search records how ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity and Copilot answer South African buyer questions, then fixes what keeps the brand out: crawler access, consistent entity facts, answer-first pages and honest mentions on the sources those engines cite. Progress is judged by rerunning the same prompts every month.

  • Search 'AEO agency South Africa' and half the results are SARS pages about Authorised Economic Operator customs status.
  • Google AI Mode began rolling out in South Africa on 21 August 2025, as a tab in Search and in the Google app.
  • Microsoft's AI Diffusion Report ranks South Africa first in Africa for generative AI use, at 23.1% of working-age people in Q1 2026.
  • The ARB Social Media Code requires paid and gifted mentions to be labelled, so we only pursue honest, disclosed coverage.

01

Why does 'AEO agency South Africa' return SARS customs pages?

Because in South Africa AEO first means Authorised Economic Operator, the customs accreditation the South African Revenue Service grants to trusted traders. When we checked the results for 'aeo agency south africa' on 22 October 2026, SARS media releases about its AEO mutual recognition arrangements with the USA, India and the UK sat beside freight and engineering trade articles, and only one marketing agency's pages appeared.

So to be clear: on this page AEO means answer engine optimisation, the work of getting a brand cited inside AI search answers. If you were looking for a GEO agency in Johannesburg or an AI SEO agency in Cape Town, it is the same job under a different label. Our explainer on aeo vs geo shows where each term came from and why the method matters more than the acronym.

02

What does AI search look like in South Africa in 2026?

South African buyers have had Google's AI features for about two years, and they use AI tools more than anyone else on the continent. Google's AI Overviews reached South Africa in the 28 October 2024 expansion to more than 100 countries; press coverage of that rollout named South Africa alongside Canada, Australia, Nigeria and the Philippines. AI Mode followed on 21 August 2025, rolling out as a tab on the results page and in the Google app for Android and iOS, as HapaKenya and Stuff reported at the time.

Adoption is real but not universal. Microsoft's AI Diffusion Report, covered by Ecofin Agency in May 2026, puts South Africa first in Africa with 23.1% of people aged 15 to 64 using generative AI tools in the first quarter of 2026, ranked 46th of 147 economies. That means a large share of South African buyers still search the classic way, so the foundations still matter.

Google is the stage. StatCounter puts Google at 91.75% of South African searches in September 2026, with Bing at 7.36%. That Bing share is higher than in Ireland or the UAE, so our South African plans include Bing Webmaster Tools from day one, because Bing's AI Performance report is the only first-party view of Copilot citations.

Which South African sectors do we help appear in AI answers?

We work with South African businesses wherever buyers now ask an assistant for a shortlist before they ask a colleague. Financial services and fintech firms in Sandton and Cape Town compete with comparison sites for prompts about insurance, medical aid and business banking, so every product fact an AI answer might repeat has to be accurate, current and consistent across the brand's own pages.

B2B SaaS and IT firms selling from Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban into Africa, the UK and the US need G2 and Capterra profiles, honest comparison pages and integration documentation the engines can read. Ecommerce brands need clean product feeds, rand prices and delivery facts on crawlable pages.

Hotels, game lodges and travel brands compete with booking sites and Tripadvisor for 'where to stay' prompts. We also support law firms, accounting practices and other professional services, plus local businesses whose Google Business Profile, Hellopeter page and Brabys or Snupit listing often shape what an assistant says about them.

04

Which AEO services can South African teams hire from us?

The full set, delivered remotely in South African English. Most engagements start with an AEO audit: we record how each engine answers your South African prompts today, find what blocks citations and rank the fixes, so you can decide on a longer programme with evidence in hand.

Technical AEO covers robots.txt, Cloudflare's AI crawler settings, server-rendered HTML, sitemaps and IndexNow. AI visibility tracking reruns the prompt set every month and reports citation share, Search Console data and GA4 referrals together.

Engine work follows where your buyers are. ChatGPT SEO focuses on OAI-SearchBot access and the third-party pages ChatGPT reads, while Perplexity SEO covers PerplexityBot and the sources Perplexity favours. For content, our GEO services and AEO content writing rebuild key pages into answer-first formats with named sources and visible review dates. If your team would rather run the work itself, AEO consulting supplies the prompt set, priorities and training.

05

Which South African buyer prompts do we test, and how is progress measured?

We write prompts the way South Africans type them: rand prices, place names such as Sandton, Umhlanga or Stellenbosch, local terms such as 'medical aid' rather than 'health insurance', and local institutions such as SARS or the CIPC. Prompts written in American English surface different sources, so the South African set stays separate from any UK or US set and stays fixed so monthly comparisons hold.

Progress is measured four ways: citation share across the prompt set, GA4 referral sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com, Search Console's generative AI performance data, and Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance for Copilot citations. If you run separate South African and British pages, we check the en-ZA and en-GB hreflang tags so Google shows each market the right version.

What rules apply to AI search optimisation in South Africa?

Three sets of rules touch this work: the Advertising Regulatory Board's code, consumer law and data protection law. Our tactics are designed to sit well inside all three; this is general information, not legal advice.

  • The ARB's Social Media Code, an appendix to its Code of Advertising Practice (current version dated February 2026), requires paid social content to be clearly identifiable and influencers to disclose money or goods received, typically with labels such as #ad or #sponsored.
  • The Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 bars false, misleading or deceptive representations, which covers invented reviews and made-up claims on comparison pages.
  • Hellopeter says it uses automated and manual checks to find fake reviews and removes them, so planted reviews are both unlawful and likely to disappear.
  • POPIA section 69 bars direct marketing by email or SMS without consent unless the person is an existing customer, so review requests go only to genuine customers who have dealt with you.
  • Paid placements on 'best agency' or 'best product' lists should be labelled honestly; we do not buy listicle spots.
07

How do we work with South African teams across time zones?

South Africa is one of the easiest markets for us to serve. South Africa Standard Time is UTC+2 and India Standard Time is UTC+5:30, and neither country uses daylight saving, so our Delhi team is always three and a half hours ahead. A 9:00 call in Johannesburg is 12:30 in Delhi, which gives a full shared working morning with no seasonal shifts.

Most clients settle into one weekly call, a shared prompt log and a written monthly report. Prompt runs and crawler checks happen in our morning, before your team logs on, and fixes agreed on a call are usually ready the next working day. If you also sell into America, our US office can join calls in their hours.

08

What happens in the first 90 days with an AEO agency in South Africa?

Month one measures, month two fixes, month three gives the first fair comparison. We avoid declaring wins from a single answer because engines vary between runs.

Days 1 to 30 cover the South African prompt baseline, a robots.txt and Cloudflare review, Bing Webmaster Tools verification and an entity check across Organization schema, your CIPC registration details on the site, Google Business Profile, Hellopeter, Brabys and LinkedIn. Days 31 to 60 cover page restructuring, a review request plan that stays inside POPIA and the ARB code, and the first digital PR outreach for honest mentions in South African trade and business media. Days 61 to 90 rerun every prompt and set priorities for the next quarter.

09

What does AEO cost in South Africa, and who is it not for?

South Africa is one of the few markets with published local prices. MO Agency's pricing guide, dated 8 September 2026, lists AEO and GEO programmes from R22,500 a month on a 12-month contract, and from R45,600 a month for a wider retainer that adds paid media, digital PR and weekly reporting. Our guide to AEO pricing sets these beside UK, US and Indian benchmarks.

We take a simpler route: one fixed price per engagement, agreed after a free AEO visibility check, so the full cost is in writing before any work starts.

It suits South African companies with an indexed site, a clear buyer and someone who can approve changes quickly. It is not for teams that want a promised spot in ChatGPT, plan to buy reviews, or have no organic foundations yet. The mistakes we see most are fixable: Cloudflare defaults blocking OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot, South African pages that copy American prompts and dollar prices, leaving Hellopeter complaints unanswered on pages engines can read, and publishing llms.txt in the hope it changes citations when no major engine has confirmed using it.

How it works

How an engagement runs

  1. 01

    Free visibility check

A handful of South African buyer prompts and a robots.txt read show whether a fuller engagement makes sense.

  2. 02

    Fixed-price proposal

We agree the engines, prompts, markets and outputs, and confirm one price in writing.

  3. 03

    Baseline, then fixes

We log the starting answers, then work through access, entity and page fixes in priority order.

  4. 04

    Earned mentions

We pursue honest, disclosed coverage on the South African directories, review sites and publications your prompt results show engines citing.

  5. 05

    Monthly rerun and review

Each month the same prompts run again and we walk your team through what moved and why.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are you a South African AEO agency?

We are not based in South Africa. AEO Services Agency is the AEO and GEO practice of Greenwolf Tech Labs, with offices in India and the USA, and we work remotely with South African brands using local prompts, rand prices, South African spelling and local directories.

Is answer engine optimisation related to the SARS AEO programme?

No. The SARS Authorised Economic Operator programme is a customs accreditation for businesses that move goods across borders. Answer engine optimisation is a marketing discipline focused on being cited by AI search tools such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity.

When did Google AI Mode launch in South Africa?

AI Mode began rolling out in South Africa on 21 August 2025, alongside Kenya and Nigeria, as a tab on the results page and in the Google app. AI Overviews arrived earlier, in Google's October 2024 expansion to more than 100 countries.

How much does an AEO agency cost in South Africa?

Published South African prices start around R22,500 a month: MO Agency's September 2026 guide lists that as its entry programme, with a wider retainer from R45,600. We quote one fixed price per engagement after a free AEO visibility check, and our pricing guide compares local and international rates.

How long does AI search optimisation take for a South African business?

Access fixes can register within days; OpenAI says robots.txt changes for OAI-SearchBot take about 24 hours. Content and mention work usually needs two or three monthly reruns before a reliable trend shows, because AI answers vary between runs.

What is the difference between a GEO agency and an AEO agency in South Africa?

Mostly the label. GEO stresses generative engines and AEO stresses answers, but both aim to get your brand named and cited in AI search. Ask any agency how it measures results, because the method matters more than the acronym.

Does Hellopeter affect what ChatGPT says about my company?

It can, when an engine draws on review sites to describe a business, but the weight varies by prompt and category. We check whether Hellopeter, Google reviews or sector directories appear in your own prompt results before advising where to focus, and we never post or buy reviews.

Can an agency guarantee my brand appears in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?

No. No one can promise a citation, because AI answers change between runs and no engine publishes its ranking rules. A credible agency fixes access, content and mentions, then shows movement on a fixed prompt set over several months.

Do I need a local agency in Johannesburg or Cape Town for AEO?

Not necessarily. The work is technical, content and outreach work done online, so local knowledge of prompts, directories and rules matters more than a street address. South Africa's time zone sits three and a half hours behind India, which leaves a full shared working morning with our team.

Should a South African site block GPTBot?

That is a policy choice. Blocking GPTBot opts you out of OpenAI model training only; appearing in ChatGPT search depends on OAI-SearchBot, which OpenAI says must be allowed. Cloudflare's managed robots.txt can block training bots while leaving search crawlers open.
