Multi-country AEO

International AEO for brands selling in more than one country

International AEO adapts answer engine work to each country and language you sell in, because ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode do not treat markets the same way. It is for marketing leads at companies serving several English-speaking markets or adding non-English ones. You get a prompt baseline per market, a language and hreflang plan, and a directory and regulation checklist for every country in scope.

Quick answer

How do you do AEO across multiple countries and languages?

International AEO means building a prompt set for each market and language, keeping localized pages with correct hreflang, and checking which sources each engine cites locally. Google's AI Overviews tend to cite sources in the prompt's language, while ChatGPT often runs English searches as well, so you need local-language pages and strong English authority.

  • AI Mode reached different countries on different dates, so markets are at different stages.
  • ChatGPT often searches in English even for non-English prompts; AI Overviews lean local.
  • Google documents hreflang for localized variants, with no mention of AI features.
  • Directories and review rules change at every border, so each market gets its own checklist.

01

Why does international AEO need a separate plan per market?

Because the features, the engines people use and the sources that get cited all differ by country. Google's announcements show AI Mode arriving in the US on 20 May 2025, for all users in India on 8 July 2025 and in the UK on 28 July 2025, then expanding in English to many more countries on 21 August 2025 and to more languages on 7 October 2025.

Search engine share varies too. StatCounter's September 2026 data shows Bing with a much larger share in the US, Canada and Australia than in India or the UAE, so Bing Webmaster Tools and Copilot work earns more attention in some markets than in others.

02

How do AI engines handle prompts in different languages?

Differently by engine. Peec AI's study of 10 million prompts found that for about 78% of non-English prompts, ChatGPT also ran searches in English. Google's AI Overviews lean the other way: a secondary analysis by Temso found 85.4% of overview citations matched the prompt's language.

The result is a two-part job. Local-language pages give Google something to cite in that language, while English-language authority, reviews and coverage keep feeding ChatGPT's answers in every market, including ones where buyers type in another language.

03

Does hreflang affect AI answers?

Not that Google documents. Its guidance on localized versions says hreflang tells Google which pages are regional or language variants of each other, that Google does not use hreflang to detect a page's language, and the document says nothing about AI features.

We still implement it carefully, with codes such as en-US, en-GB, en-AU, en-IN and en-SG, because it keeps the right regional page in front of searchers and stops variants competing. We pair it with visible local signals: currency, spelling ('optimisation' for the UK, Australia, India and Singapore), contact details and country-specific examples. For translated pages we recommend human review before publishing any page you want cited.

04

Which local sources should each market cover?

Every country has its own directories and review sites, and local answers draw on them. Our starting lists are:

We confirm each list against the citations recorded in your prompt runs before any work starts, because the sources engines actually use for your category can differ from the general directories above. For B2B brands, local trade associations and national business press often matter more than consumer review sites.

  • United States: Yelp and BBB for local trades, G2 for software.
  • United Kingdom: Yell, Checkatrade and Trustpilot.
  • Canada: Yellow Pages Canada and HomeStars.
  • Australia: True Local, Hipages and Productreview.
  • India: Justdial, Sulekha and IndiaMART.
  • United Arab Emirates: Bayut and Dubizzle for property.
05

Which review and advertising rules change by country?

Rules on reviews, endorsements and disclosure differ, and AEO work touches all three. This is not legal advice; we flag the rules and your counsel confirms them.

  • US: the FTC Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule has applied since 21 October 2024.
  • UK: the DMCC Act bans fake reviews and reviews with hidden incentives from 6 April 2025.
  • Canada: private parties can bring deceptive-marketing cases under the Competition Act from 20 June 2025.
  • Australia: ACCC guidance requires disclosure of commercial ties and warns against removing negative reviews selectively.
  • Singapore: ASAS guidelines require sponsorship disclosure in interactive marketing.
  • UAE: the Media Council requires an Advertiser Permit to promote third-party products online.

How do we run and measure international AEO?

One baseline per market, never a single global average. We write prompts in each market's language and spelling, run them with location settings for that country, and record the cited sources per engine.

Monthly reports break out citation share, GA4 referrals from AI sources by country and Search Console generative AI data by country, so a gain in the UK cannot hide a loss in Australia. We work remotely across the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, the UAE and Singapore, with offices in India and the USA, and every engagement is fixed-price after a free AEO visibility check.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do we need separate UK and US pages for AI search?

If pricing, spelling, regulations or examples differ, separate regional pages with correct hreflang help searchers and engines reach the right version. If the content is identical, one page may do. We decide per page based on what buyers in each market ask.

Will ChatGPT cite our English site for non-English questions?

It can. Peec AI's research found ChatGPT often runs English searches for non-English prompts, so English authority still counts. Google's AI Overviews lean toward sources in the prompt's language, which is why local-language pages matter for Google.

Is AI Mode available in every country?

Not on the same timeline. Google launched AI Mode in the US in May 2025, in India and the UK in July 2025, expanded it in English to many more countries in August 2025 and added more languages in October 2025. Check each market before planning.

Does Google use hreflang for AI Overviews?

Google's hreflang documentation covers localized versions in Search and does not mention AI features. It also says Google does not use hreflang to detect a page's language. Implement it correctly for regular search and rely on clear local content for AI answers.

Can we use machine translation for international AEO?

It is a reasonable first draft, but we recommend human review before publishing any page you want cited, especially where regulated claims, prices or local terms appear. Errors in translated pages can be repeated by engines in that language.

Which countries do you work with?

We work remotely with brands in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, the UAE and Singapore. AEO Services Agency is the AEO and GEO practice of Greenwolf Tech Labs, which has offices in India and the USA.

Should Bing get more attention in some markets?

Yes. StatCounter's September 2026 figures show Bing with a noticeably larger share in the US, Canada and Australia than in India or the UAE. Bing also does the crawling for Copilot, so Bing Webmaster Tools and its AI Performance report deserve more time in those markets.
