Quick answer

What does an AEO agency in Germany do for AI search?

An AEO agency Germany brands hire for AI search records how ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, KI-Modus, Perplexity and Copilot answer German buyer questions, in German and English, then fixes what keeps the brand out: crawler access, consistent company facts, answer-first pages and honest mentions on the German sources those engines cite. Progress is judged by rerunning the same prompts monthly.

  • In Germany, 'AEO' in search results usually means the customs Authorised Economic Operator status (Zugelassener Wirtschaftsbeteiligter), not AI search.
  • Google brought AI Overviews to Germany in German and English on 25 March 2025, and KI-Modus (AI Mode) went live on 8 October 2025.
  • A Bitkom survey published in May 2026 found 67% of Germans use ChatGPT, Copilot or Gemini at least occasionally.
  • UWG Section 5b(3) requires anyone showing reviews to say whether and how they check the reviews are genuine.

01

Why does 'AEO agency Germany' return customs pages?

Because in Germany AEO first means Authorised Economic Operator, the EU customs status known in German as Zugelassener Wirtschaftsbeteiligter. When we checked the English results for 'aeo agency germany' on 20 October 2026, Germany Trade and Invest's guide to EORI numbers and AEO status, customs consultancies and a Spanish tax agency file filled most of page one, with a single marketing page from a Munich agency among them.

On this page AEO means answer engine optimization: the work of getting a company cited inside AI search answers. German agencies mostly sell the same work as GEO-Optimierung or KI-Sichtbarkeit, and a GEO-Agentur in Berlin or Hamburg is doing the same job under another label. Our explainer on aeo vs geo shows where each name came from and why the method matters more than the acronym.

02

What does AI search look like in Germany in 2026?

Germans use AI assistants widely, but classic search still carries most commercial discovery. In a representative Bitkom survey of 1,003 people aged 16 and over, run in March and April 2026 and reported by teltarif.de on 2 May 2026, 67% said they use applications such as ChatGPT, Copilot or Gemini at least occasionally and 34% use AI at least weekly. ChatGPT was the most used at 71% of users, ahead of Gemini at 50% and Copilot at 43%.

Google remains the main stage. StatCounter puts Google at 87.84% of German searches in September 2026 and Bing at 6.49%. That Bing slice is worth the small effort it takes, because Copilot draws on Bing's index, so our German plans include Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow alongside Googlebot access and Search Console.

Google AI Overviews reached Germany on 25 March 2025, in German and English, in the same European expansion that covered Ireland. KI-Modus followed on 8 October 2025: dpa, reported by channelpartner.de, said Google switched it on immediately in more than 40 countries including Germany, Austria and Switzerland, with sources shown beside each answer. AI Mode splits a question into subtopics and runs many searches at once, and that query fan-out decides which German pages get cited.

03

Which German sectors and cities do we help appear in AI answers?

We work with German companies wherever buyers ask an assistant for a shortlist before they ask a colleague. Manufacturers and industrial suppliers from the Mittelstand are a natural fit: engineering buyers in Stuttgart, Munich or the Ruhr increasingly ask 'which suppliers make X to DIN or ISO spec', and the answer depends on clear product data, spec sheets in HTML rather than PDF only, and trade-fair and trade-press mentions the engines can read.

For B2B SaaS firms in Berlin, Munich and Hamburg, the work centers on G2, Capterra and OMR Reviews profiles, honest comparison pages and integration docs. Because many German software companies sell across the DACH region and into the UK and US, we often run separate German, Austrian and United Kingdom prompt sets so one market's answers do not hide another's.

We also support ecommerce brands shipping across the EU, financial services and fintech firms in Frankfurt where every repeated claim must be accurate, and professional services such as accounting firms and law firms. Trades and other local businesses often find that Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and their Google Business Profile shape what an assistant says about them. This page is general information, not legal advice.

04

Which AEO services can German teams hire from us?

The full set, delivered remotely in English, with prompts tested in German and English. Most German engagements start with an AEO audit: we record how each engine answers your prompts today, find what blocks citations and rank the fixes, so you decide on a longer program with evidence in hand.

Technical AEO covers robots.txt, Cloudflare's AI crawler settings, server-rendered HTML, sitemaps and IndexNow, which matters for German sites whose consent banners or JavaScript shops hide content from crawlers. AI visibility tracking reruns your prompt sets every month and reports citation share, Search Console data and GA4 referrals in one place.

Engine work follows where your buyers are. ChatGPT SEO focuses on OAI-SearchBot access and the third-party pages ChatGPT reads, and Perplexity SEO covers PerplexityBot and the sources Perplexity tends to cite. For content, our GEO services and AEO content writing restructure key pages into answer-first formats with named sources and visible review dates. German copy should be written or approved by a native speaker on your side or a translator you trust; we supply the structure, questions and evidence. If your team prefers to run the work itself, aeo consulting provides the prompt sets, priorities and training.

05

Which German buyer prompts do we test, and how is progress measured?

We write prompts the way German buyers type them: in German, with euro prices, 'inkl. MwSt.' or 'netto' where B2B buyers expect it, city names, and German institutions such as DIN, TÜV, BaFin or the Handwerkskammer. English prompts from the same buyers often surface different sources, so we keep separate German and English sets and keep each fixed, which keeps monthly comparisons fair. If you run German and English versions of a page, we check the hreflang tags so Google shows the right one to each audience; our guide to international aeo covers the setup.

Progress is measured four ways: citation share across each prompt set, GA4 referral sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com, Search Console's generative AI performance data, and Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance for Copilot citations.

What rules apply to AI search optimization in Germany?

Unfair competition law, privacy law and the EU AI Act all touch this work, and German competitors and associations enforce the first one actively through warning letters (Abmahnungen). Our tactics are designed to sit inside these rules; this is general information, not legal advice.

  • Section 5b(3) of the UWG, in force since 28 May 2022, requires any business that shows customer reviews to say whether and how it checks that they come from people who actually used or bought the product.
  • The Wettbewerbszentrale, a self-regulatory body that enforces fair competition law, pursues bought reviews; it has issued warning letters in such cases and won a Hamburg Regional Court ruling against showing an average star rating without the number of reviews or the period they cover.
  • Fake locations count as misleading too: the Higher Regional Court of Cologne ruled in December 2016 (6 U 119/16) that listing branches on gelbeseiten.de that did not exist breached the UWG. Consistent, truthful listings are both an AI search signal and a legal duty.
  • EU AI Act Article 50 transparency duties took effect on 2 August 2026; the Digital Omnibus, approved by the Council on 29 June 2026, did not defer them, giving only systems already on the market until 2 December 2026 for machine-readable marking.
  • GDPR applies to lead forms, review tools and tracking, so GA4 measurement of AI referrals runs through your existing consent setup.
07

How do we work with German teams across time zones?

We work remotely, and both our offices overlap with the German working day. Germany returns to Central European Time on 25 October 2026, after which India is four and a half hours ahead; during summer time the gap is three and a half hours. A 9am Berlin call lands in our Delhi early afternoon, and fixes agreed in the morning are often ready by your end of day.

Our US office covers your late afternoon: a 4pm call in Frankfurt or Munich falls in the US East Coast morning. Most German clients settle into one weekly call, a shared prompt log and a written monthly report in English, with prompt runs and crawler checks done outside your hours.

08

What happens in the first 90 days with an AEO agency in Germany?

Month one measures, month two fixes, month three gives the first fair comparison. We avoid declaring wins from a single answer, because engines vary between runs.

Days 1 to 30 cover the German and English prompt baselines, a robots.txt, Cloudflare and consent-banner review, Bing Webmaster Tools verification and an entity check across Organization schema, your Handelsregister details and Impressum page, Google Business Profile, Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche, LinkedIn and Xing. Days 31 to 60 cover page restructuring, a review request process with a UWG-compliant verification note, and the first digital PR outreach for honest mentions in German trade and business media. Days 61 to 90 rerun every prompt and set priorities for the next quarter.

09

What does AEO cost in Germany, and who is it not for?

German agencies publish more price guidance than most markets. Dr. Web's 2026 GEO agency comparison gives typical ranges of about €1,000 to €3,000 for a one-off GEO audit, €1,000 to €2,500 a month for an entry retainer and €2,500 to €5,000 a month for ongoing support, with full strategies from €5,000 a month. Our guide to AEO pricing sets these against UK and US figures.

We take a simpler route: one fixed price per engagement, set after a free AEO visibility check, so the whole cost is agreed in writing before work starts.

It suits German companies with an indexed site, a clear buyer and someone who can approve changes quickly. It is not for teams that want a promised spot in ChatGPT, plan to buy reviews, or need a German-speaking agency to write all copy in-house. The mistakes we see most are fixable: Cloudflare defaults blocking OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot, consent banners that hide page text from crawlers, German pages that are thin machine translations of English ones, and llms.txt files published in the hope of citations when no major engine has confirmed using them.

How it works

How an engagement runs

  1. 01

    Free visibility check

A handful of German buyer prompts and a robots.txt read show whether a fuller engagement makes sense.

  2. 02

    Fixed-price proposal

We agree the engines, languages, prompts, markets and outputs, and confirm one price in writing.

  3. 03

    Baseline, then fixes

We log the starting answers, then work through access, entity and page fixes in priority order.

  4. 04

    Earned mentions

We pursue honest coverage on the German directories, review sites and trade publications your prompt results show engines citing.

  5. 05

    Monthly rerun and review

Each month the same prompts run again and we walk your team through what moved and why.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are you a German AEO agency?

We are not based in Germany. AEO Services Agency is the AEO and GEO practice of Greenwolf Tech Labs, with offices in India and the USA, and we work remotely with German brands using German prompts, German directories and euro pricing in our analysis.

Is answer engine optimization related to the customs AEO certificate?

No. The customs AEO status, Zugelassener Wirtschaftsbeteiligter, is an EU certification for trusted importers and exporters. Answer engine optimization is a marketing discipline focused on being cited by AI search tools such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity.

When did Google AI Mode launch in Germany?

KI-Modus, the German name for AI Mode, went live in Germany on 8 October 2025, according to dpa. AI Overviews had arrived earlier, on 25 March 2025, in German and English.

Is GEO the same as AEO in Germany?

In practice, yes. German agencies mostly sell this work as GEO-Optimierung or KI-Sichtbarkeit, while English-language buyers often call it AEO. Both aim to get a brand cited in AI answers; ask any agency which prompts it measures and how.

How much does an AEO or GEO agency cost in Germany?

Dr. Web's 2026 comparison lists GEO audits at about €1,000 to €3,000 and entry retainers at about €1,000 to €2,500 a month. We quote one fixed price after a free AEO visibility check rather than publishing a rate card.

Do we need German-language content to appear in German AI answers?

Usually yes for German buyers, because German prompts tend to cite German-language sources. Separate German pages with correct hreflang give engines local facts to quote; thin machine translations rarely earn citations.

How long does AI search optimization take for a German company?

Access fixes can register within days; OpenAI says robots.txt changes for OAI-SearchBot take about 24 hours. Content and mention work usually needs two or three monthly reruns before a reliable trend shows, because AI answers vary between runs.

Can we ask employees to write reviews to improve AI visibility in Germany?

Not without clear disclosure. Undisclosed staff or bought reviews are misleading under the UWG, and the Wettbewerbszentrale pursues them with warning letters. We only help you ask genuine customers for honest reviews.

Should a German site block GPTBot?

That is a policy choice. Blocking GPTBot opts you out of OpenAI model training only; appearing in ChatGPT search depends on OAI-SearchBot, which OpenAI says must be allowed. Cloudflare's managed robots.txt can block training bots while leaving search crawlers open.
