Hospitality and travel
AEO for hospitality and travel brands that want direct citations, not just OTA mentions
AEO for hospitality is the work of getting your hotel, resort, cruise line or tour brand recommended and linked when travelers ask ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini or Perplexity where to stay or how to plan a trip. It is for revenue, distribution and digital marketing leads who watch online travel agencies take the click. You get a picture of which booking sites and review platforms shape answers for your properties, fixes to your own site so it can be cited directly, and monthly tracking of the prompts that bring bookings.

Quick answer
How can a hotel get recommended and linked by ChatGPT instead of an OTA?
AEO for hospitality starts by accepting that booking sites and Tripadvisor supply most travel citations, then making sure those listings are complete and accurate while your own site gives assistants a clean, citable source: one canonical URL per property, total prices shown, amenities and policies in text, and a matching Google Business Profile.
- Online travel agencies and Tripadvisor supply most hotel citations in AI answers today.
- Brands are often mentioned by name but linked far less often than their OTA listings.
- Canonical URL errors can stop a brand's own pages from being cited at all.
- Total-price rules in the US and UK apply to rates shown on answer-ready pages.

Why do AI answers send travelers to Booking.com and Expedia?
Because those sites hold the structured inventory, prices and reviews that assistants can compare. A vendor study by Cloudbeds of 145 hotels found booking sites made up 55% of AI citations, with Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor cited most.
That is not a reason to give up on direct. It means AEO for hospitality has two jobs: keep your OTA and review listings accurate, since they will be read either way, and make your own site the best source for the facts travelers ask about next, such as parking, cancellation terms, accessibility, pet policy and what the resort fee covers.
Which sources lead travel answers for hotels, cruises and destinations?
It depends on the sub-vertical, so we map yours before writing anything. The table below draws on vendor research and on the top web results we checked in October 2026 with a US search tool. Those web results are not a live Google page and not a list of AI citations; they show which publishers hold the pages answer engines search.
For "best boutique hotels in Lisbon", the results we checked were yahoo.com, skyscanner.co.in, thehotelguru.com, theculturetrip.com and oyster.com, plus one spam page. No hotel's own site appeared, which is typical of destination roundup prompts.
| Segment | Sources that lead today | What to fix first |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels and resorts | Booking.com, Expedia, Tripadvisor; Tripadvisor cited first or second for nearly every chain in Gradial's study | Listing accuracy, review responses, canonical property pages |
| Cruise lines | cruisecritic.com was the top source in most cruise-line reports in Gradial's study | Cruise Critic profile, ship and itinerary pages with dated details |
| Destination roundups | Editorial roundups and metasearch sites such as Skyscanner, The Hotel Guru, Culture Trip, Oyster | Coverage in editorial lists through press and familiarization trips |
| Local stays and dining | Google Business Profile; AI Mode books restaurants through OpenTable, Resy and Tock | Business Profile completeness and booking partner links |

Why is our hotel mentioned in AI answers but not linked?
Usually because the assistant finds a third-party page easier to cite than yours. A vendor study by Gradial of 55 travel brands across seven AI providers, published July 2026, found brands' own URLs were cited 15.8% of the time against a 43.3% rate of being mentioned, and one brand was never cited because of a canonical URL mismatch.
We look for the same faults on your site: property pages that canonicalize to a booking-engine domain, duplicate URLs created by rate parameters, room details loaded only by JavaScript, and amenity lists stored as images. Each one makes a third-party listing the easier source to quote, even when the traveler named your brand.
- One canonical, server-rendered URL per property, room type and package
- Booking-engine parameters kept out of indexable URLs
- Policies (check-in, cancellation, pets, accessibility, parking) as text with a last-updated date
- Hotel schema that matches what the page shows, plus sameAs links to official profiles
How do junk-fee and drip-pricing rules affect AEO for hospitality?
They decide how rates must appear on pages an assistant might quote. In the US, the FTC junk-fees rule, in effect from 12 May 2025, requires lodging prices to show the total including mandatory fees such as resort or destination fees. In the UK, the DMCC Act bans drip pricing, with fines that can reach 10% of global turnover.
We make sure any price on an answer-ready page is the total price, that mandatory fees are explained in plain text next to it, and that the same number appears on your site, your OTA listings and your Business Profile. This is not legal advice; your counsel should confirm the rules for each market you sell into.
What does a travel brand need beyond its own website to compete?
Strong listings and real editorial coverage. That means complete Tripadvisor, Booking.com, Expedia and Google Business Profile entries with current photos and management responses, Cruise Critic for cruise lines, and placement in the editorial roundups assistants read for "best" prompts.
Google AI Mode can now call businesses for users and complete restaurant bookings through OpenTable, Resy and Tock, and Google said at I/O 2026 that booking is extending to local services. Check your Business Profile settings for AI calls and keep booking partner links current. YouTube walkthroughs of rooms, ships and amenities help too; we plan them as answers to the questions guests ask before booking.
How do we measure direct bookings from AI answers?
With a fixed set of trip prompts and booking-engine data, not impressions alone. Each month we run destination, property, comparison and policy prompts such as "family-friendly all-inclusive in Mexico under $300 a night" or "hotel near [venue] with free cancellation and parking" in each engine, and record whether you are named, linked or replaced by an OTA.
In GA4 we separate referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com and follow them into the booking engine, which usually needs cross-domain tracking set up correctly. Search Console's generative AI report and Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance add first-party data for Google and Copilot.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can a hotel get cited by ChatGPT instead of Booking.com?
Sometimes, for questions your own site answers best, such as policies, fees, room details and on-site amenities. For broad best-hotel prompts, OTAs and Tripadvisor will usually be cited too, so keeping those listings accurate matters as much as your own pages.
What is AEO for hospitality in simple terms?
It is making a hotel, resort, cruise line or tour brand easy for AI assistants to find, describe accurately and link. That covers your own site's structure and policies, your OTA and review listings, editorial coverage, and tracking which travel prompts name you.
Why would a hotel get zero citations in AI answers?
Technical faults are a common cause. Vendor research by Gradial found one travel brand was not cited at all because of a canonical URL mismatch. Pages that canonicalize to a booking engine, or load room data only through scripts, are worth checking first.
Do resort fees need to be shown in the price AI assistants quote?
In the US, the FTC junk-fees rule requires lodging prices to include mandatory fees, and the UK bans drip pricing under the DMCC Act. Showing total prices consistently on your site and listings keeps quoted figures accurate. This is not legal advice.
Does Google AI Mode book hotels or restaurants directly?
Google says AI Mode completes restaurant bookings through OpenTable, Resy and Tock and announced at I/O 2026 that booking is extending to local services. It can also call businesses for users, which you control in your Business Profile settings.
How much does AEO for a hotel group cost?
We quote a fixed price after a free AEO visibility check, based on the number of properties, markets and languages involved. Single properties and multi-brand groups are scoped differently.
