AEO for insurance carriers, agencies and brokers

AEO for insurance is the work of getting your carrier, agency or brokerage named and described correctly when people ask ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot which policy to buy, which insurer to trust or which local agent to call. We work with marketing leads at carriers, independent agencies, brokers, MGAs and insurtechs selling in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and beyond. You get a baseline of the prompts your buyers type by line of business, a map of who is cited today, rewritten coverage and claims pages, and monthly reporting tied to quote starts and calls.

Quick answer

How does an insurance company or agency get recommended by ChatGPT and AI Overviews?

AEO for insurance starts with the sources AI answers already use: comparison sites, quote engines, reviewers, Reddit and a few carrier explainers. Publish plain-text coverage, eligibility and claims answers per line of business, keep directory and review profiles consistent, allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, and track a fixed prompt set monthly. No one can promise a citation.

  • Each line of business (auto, home, life, small business, Medicare) is won by different sources, so plan by line.
  • Comparison and quote sites lead the broad best-insurer prompts; carriers and agents can win the specific ones.
  • Every page an assistant reads is still advertising under insurance rules, so compliance review is built into the work.
  • We report citation share, quote starts and calls from AI referrals, not screenshots.

01

Who is AEO for insurance built for, and who should skip it?

It suits four kinds of insurance business. Carriers that want their own explainers and product pages cited instead of a comparison site's summary of them. Independent agencies and brokers that want to be the local name when someone asks for an agent who writes contractor or restaurant cover. MGAs and specialty writers in niches where buyers ask detailed eligibility questions. And insurtechs whose AI answers still describe a product, state list or price model they changed last year.

It is a poor fit for an agency with no website beyond a carrier-provided template and no reviews anywhere; fixing your Google Business Profile and asking real clients for reviews comes first, and our page on local businesses covers that groundwork. Banks, lenders and wealth firms face a different source mix, covered on our financial services page. Health plans that also run provider networks should read our healthcare page as well, because provider directories and YMYL review rules overlap.

02

Which insurance prompts do buyers ask, and who wins them today?

Insurance prompts split by line of business and by stage. We test category prompts (best insurer for a situation), comparison prompts (carrier A vs carrier B), eligibility prompts (does my policy cover a specific event), cost prompts and local agent prompts. The table summarizes the top web results we checked on 18 October 2026 with a US-based search tool. It shows who holds the ground answer engines search; it is not a record of any single ChatGPT answer.

The pattern is clear. Broad best-insurer prompts are held by personal finance publishers and quote engines, and local agent prompts are held by directories and agent locators rather than agency websites. The specific questions, such as whether a policy covers flood or what a business owner's policy includes, are where a carrier or agency's own answer-first content can compete, because only you can state your own terms precisely.

03

What do citation studies say about insurance answers?

They say the engines disagree and that comparison sites matter most in Google. A vendor study by Conductor, its 2026 insurance benchmark (3.6 million citations from more than 178,000 prompts, January to May 2026) found Google AI Mode produced 43.9% of the insurance citations it analyzed and Perplexity 33.6%. Insureon, Progressive, The Hartford, New York Life and Chubb were the most cited domains across engines, while in Google AI Overviews Policygenius took 13.5% and The Zebra 10.4% of broker and aggregator citations.

A vendor study by Temso covering July to September 2026 across 12 countries found reddit.com was ChatGPT's most cited insurance domain and that the top 20 domains of any two engines overlapped by only 24%; only canstar.com.au and forbes.com made the top 20 in all five engines it tracked. Two lessons follow. First, a plan built only for Google misses most of what ChatGPT and Copilot read. Second, AI citations in insurance favor brokers, aggregators and well-known carriers that publish clear explainers, so a smaller insurer competes on depth in specific lines rather than on broad best-of prompts.

04

What must an insurer or agency have to compete in AI answers?

A brand needs facts in plain text on its own site, the same facts on the third-party sites assistants read, and a reason to be named. Most insurance sites fail the first test: appetite, eligibility, states served and claims steps sit in PDFs, quote-flow screens or carrier-supplied templates that crawlers cannot read or that say the same thing as thousands of other agency sites.

Off-site, the sources differ by business. Carriers need accurate data on quote engines and comparison publishers, plus coverage in reviewer roundups, which is a digital PR task. Agencies need complete profiles on Google Business Profile, agent locators run by carriers and directories that local prompts surface, with consistent names, licenses and lines written. Everyone needs reviews requested within the rules and honest participation where buyers ask questions, including Reddit.

  • One page per line of business and per niche you write, opening with who it suits and who it does not
  • Coverage explainers that list what is included, what is excluded and how it varies by state or province
  • A claims page that states steps, documents needed and typical contact routes in text
  • Licensing, states served and carrier appointments stated on the site and matched in every directory
  • Fair comparison pages between your product and the alternatives buyers ask about
  • Organization and LocalBusiness schema markup with sameAs links to your official profiles
05

What advertising rules limit AEO for insurance?

Every page an assistant quotes is still an advertisement, so the rules on misleading claims apply in full. In the United States, the NAIC's Unfair Trade Practices Act (Model 880) bars misrepresenting policy benefits, terms or comparisons; according to a compliance summary by Saifr, the prior version is law in every state except Alabama, Illinois, Oregon, Utah and Wisconsin, and an insurer is responsible for advertisements by its producers that mention its products. Agencies that sell Medicare Advantage plans for more than one plan sponsor, without offering every plan in the area, must also display CMS's standardized third-party marketing organization disclaimer prominently on their websites (42 CFR 422.2267).

In the United Kingdom, the FCA's social media guidance FG24/1 (8 April 2024) requires each promotion to be fair, clear and not misleading on its own, which is a useful test for every FAQ answer and coverage summary we write. Review requests fall under the FTC Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule in the US, the DMCC Act in the UK, and the ACCC's review guidance in Australia. In practice this means no best-insurer claims you cannot support, no quoted prices without their conditions, compliance sign-off built into the content calendar, and no paid or filtered reviews. This is not legal advice; your compliance team has the final word.

06

Which insurance pages should be rebuilt first?

The pages that settle a buyer's question and that only you can answer precisely. For carriers that usually means coverage explainers for the most asked events, eligibility pages per product and a claims page. For agencies it means one page per commercial niche you actually write, such as contractors, restaurants or trucking, naming the coverages that niche needs and the carriers you place it with if your appointments allow you to say so.

Each page opens with a two-sentence direct answer, states the conditions that change that answer, and carries a visible last-updated date and a reviewer name from your licensed staff. Our AEO content writing team writes in that answer-first format, and our technical AEO work makes sure quote flows and rate tools do not hide the explanatory text from crawlers. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, and a default firewall or Cloudflare bot rule can block it without anyone noticing, so we check server logs for every crawler.

07

How do we measure AEO for insurance against quotes and calls?

We measure what moves revenue, not just mentions. Each month we run a fixed prompt set by line of business and market in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, and record whether you are named, how your coverage is described, which competitors appear and which URL is cited. Our AI visibility tracking service runs the same method for teams that only want measurement.

In GA4 we separate referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com and follow them to quote starts, call clicks and bound policies where your agency management system allows. Conductor's benchmark found AI engines drove about 1.08% of visits to the insurance sites it tracked, so citation share and the accuracy of answers matter as much as the clicks. Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance adds Copilot grounding queries, which counts more in the US, Canada and Australia, where StatCounter's data shows Bing holds its largest share among the markets we serve.

08

What mistakes do insurance marketers make with AI search?

The most common is publishing generic content. Carrier-supplied blog feeds give hundreds of agencies the same article on what umbrella insurance is, and an assistant has no reason to cite any one of them. The second is hiding the facts that matter in PDFs and quote flows. The third is a self-ranking best insurers list; Google's spam policies now say they apply to generative AI responses, per a Search Engine Roundtable report, and a misleading comparison is a regulatory problem as well.

Others recur in every AEO audit: agency names and licenses that differ between the site, Google Business Profile and carrier locators; claims phone numbers that changed but still appear in old directories, which leads to wrong AI answers; and treating AI search as separate from SEO, when Google's own guidance says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. If you are comparing agency quotes, our AEO pricing guide sets out published market ranges.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is AEO for insurance?

It is answer engine optimization applied to insurers, agencies and brokers: making sure AI assistants name your business and describe your coverage correctly when buyers ask which policy or agent to choose. It builds on SEO, with more weight on comparison sources, directories and plain-text coverage answers.

Can a small independent insurance agency show up in ChatGPT?

Yes, mostly for local and niche prompts rather than national best-insurer questions. Complete directory and Google Business Profile listings, real reviews and a page for each commercial niche you write give an assistant specific reasons to name you.

Which AI assistants matter most for insurance buyers?

Conductor's 2026 insurance benchmark found Google AI Mode and Perplexity produced most of the citations it analyzed, but ChatGPT reaches the most users and leans on different sources such as Reddit. We track all six major assistants because their cited sources overlap little.

Do comparison sites like Policygenius and The Zebra matter for AI visibility?

Yes. Conductor found they were among the most cited broker and aggregator domains in Google AI Overviews for insurance. Accurate data on the comparison and quote sites in your lines is often as important as your own pages.

Is AI search content treated as insurance advertising?

Your own pages and posts are advertising wherever they are read, so the NAIC Model 880 rules on misleading statements, CMS Medicare marketing rules and FCA financial promotion rules still apply. We write so your compliance team can approve each page. This is not legal advice.

Should insurance websites block AI crawlers?

Block training crawlers if you wish, but keep search crawlers allowed. OpenAI says blocking GPTBot only opts out of training, while sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers.

How long does AEO take for an insurance brand?

Page fixes such as coverage explainers and claims pages can show in prompt results within weeks. Coverage on comparison sites and reviewer roundups usually takes a quarter or more, so we judge progress on the 90-day rerun of the baseline.

Can you promise our agency will be recommended by AI assistants?

No one can promise a citation, and no assistant publishes how it ranks sources. We improve the inputs answers draw on and report citation share, quote starts and calls from AI referrals monthly.

What does AEO for an insurance company cost?

We quote a fixed price after a free AEO visibility check, based on how many lines of business, markets and pages need work. Our AEO pricing guide lists published market ranges if you want a benchmark first.
