AEO reputation management: correct what AI says about your brand

AEO reputation management is the work of finding and correcting wrong, outdated or lopsided statements that ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity and other assistants make about your company. It is for founders and marketing leads who have watched an assistant quote an old price, a retired product, the wrong leadership team or a years-old complaint thread. You get an error log with the source behind each mistake and a correction plan for every engine involved.

Quick answer

How do you fix wrong information AI assistants say about your brand?

AEO reputation management fixes wrong AI answers by correcting the sources engines retrieve, not the model itself. Report errors in AI Overviews with Google's Report a problem link, claim your Knowledge Panel, update your own pages first, then correct outdated directory, Wikipedia and review content. OpenAI's documented correction route covers personal data only.

  • Most wrong AI answers repeat a wrong or stale page that the engine retrieved.
  • Google offers feedback, Knowledge Panel and legal routes; OpenAI's documented route covers personal data.
  • Planted posts and fake reviews break Google guidance and FTC rules, so we never use them.
  • A fix only counts once repeated prompt runs show the correct statement.

01

What does AEO reputation management cover?

It covers factual errors, stale facts and unbalanced framing in AI answers about your company. Most cases fall into a few groups:

  • Stale facts: pricing, plans, locations or leadership that changed but keep reappearing.
  • Identity confusion: your company blended with a similarly named one, or your product credited to a rival.
  • Retired offers: discontinued products described as current.
  • Skewed framing: one angry forum thread presented as what customers generally think.
  • Missing context: a resolved incident described without its resolution.
02

Why do AI assistants state wrong facts about a company?

Because they repeat what they retrieve, and the retrieved pages are often old. Assistants that search the web, such as ChatGPT search and Perplexity, build answers from pages their crawlers can reach. If the most accessible page about your pricing is a three-year-old review, that page is what gets quoted.

Some sources carry outsized weight. Semrush's research on the most-cited domains found Wikipedia and Reddit remain top sources for ChatGPT, and OpenAI has had a real-time data agreement with Reddit since May 2024. A wrong statement on either can travel further than a correct one on your site.

Your own setup can cause the problem as well. If OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot is blocked in robots.txt or by a Cloudflare default, engines cannot read your current pages and fall back on whatever third parties say.

Which correction channels do Google and OpenAI offer?

Google offers more than OpenAI does. The documented routes are:

  • Google AI Overviews: the Report a problem link on the overview itself.
  • Google Knowledge Panel: claim the panel through a linked official profile; suggested changes from verified owners get priority.
  • Google legal removals: a separate troubleshooter for legal issues such as defamation.
  • OpenAI: a request through privacy.openai.com, which covers personal data, and OpenAI says it will not be able to correct inaccuracies in every case.
04

Why can't you simply ask ChatGPT to correct itself?

Because a conversation does not change the model or the sources other users' answers draw on. The documented limits are real: in the complaint brought by the privacy group noyb, OpenAI said it could not correct a wrong birth date and offered to block the output instead.

For a company rather than a person, the dependable lever is changing what the engines find. That means the source pages, not the chat window. This is not legal advice; if an answer is defamatory, involve counsel alongside the source work.

05

How do we correct the sources behind a wrong AI answer?

We trace each error to the pages carrying it, then fix them in order of influence.

  • Your site first: a dated company facts page covering pricing, leadership, locations and products, backed by matching Organization schema and sameAs links.
  • Profiles you control: LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, G2 or Capterra and app store listings updated to the same facts.
  • Third-party pages: polite correction requests to publishers and directories, each linking to your dated source.
  • Wikipedia: where an article exists, a disclosed edit request supported by independent sources rather than a direct edit.
  • Old URLs: redirects or clear notices on retired product pages so crawlers stop treating them as current.
06

What about negative Reddit threads and old reviews?

Answer them openly; do not try to bury them. Reddit Pro is a free tool that tracks brand mentions, which makes it practical to reply in the thread from an identified company account with the facts. Google's AI optimization guide advises against inauthentic mentions and the FTC Consumer Review Rule bans fake reviews, so planted posts create a second problem on top of the first.

For reviews, the lasting fix is a steady flow of honest ones that describe the product as it is now. That gives engines a current picture to weigh against a cluster of old complaints, and we never ask for honest negative reviews to be removed.

07

How is an AI answer correction measured?

With an error log that is rerun, not a screenshot. Answers vary from run to run; Semrush found only 25% of cited sources overlapped between ChatGPT's reasoning modes, so one clean answer proves little. Every logged error has a prompt, an engine, the wrong statement, the cited source and a status.

We rerun the full set monthly and mark each error fixed, improved, unchanged or new. Reports also flag regressions after site changes and show citation share for your own pages in Bing Webmaster Tools, so you can see the corrected source taking over.

How it works

How an engagement runs

  1. 01

    Free visibility check

We run brand prompts in the main engines, show you the errors we find and quote a fixed price.

  2. 02

    Capture every error

A wider prompt set records wrong statements across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini and Claude.

  3. 03

    Trace the sources

Each error is linked to the pages that carry it, including blocked crawlers on your own site.

  4. 04

    Correct in order

Your pages and profiles first, then third parties, then platform feedback channels.

  5. 05

    Recheck monthly

Repeated runs confirm which corrections have taken hold and which need another route.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I ask ChatGPT to stop saying something false about my company?

Telling ChatGPT in a chat does not change what it tells other users. OpenAI's documented correction route at privacy.openai.com covers personal data, and OpenAI says it cannot correct every inaccuracy. For company facts, correcting the sources ChatGPT retrieves is the practical route.

How do I report a wrong Google AI Overview?

Use the Report a problem link on the AI Overview itself and describe the error. If your company has a Knowledge Panel, claim it through a linked official profile, since Google gives verified owners' suggested changes priority. Then fix the pages the overview cited.

Will deleting old pages fix wrong AI answers?

Sometimes, but deletion alone can leave a gap that a third-party page fills. A better pattern is to redirect retired pages to their current equivalent or add a clear notice, and to publish a dated facts page that engines can find instead.

How is this different from traditional online reputation management?

Traditional reputation work focuses on search results and review scores. AEO reputation management starts from the AI answer itself, traces which sources produced it and measures whether the wording changes. The tactics overlap, but the evidence and the success test are different.

Do you remove negative reviews?

No. We do not ask platforms to remove honest negative reviews, and Australia's ACCC guidance, for one, warns businesses against selectively removing negative reviews. We help you respond publicly, fix the underlying issue where possible and earn current reviews that give a fairer picture.

How long does it take for a correction to appear in AI answers?

It depends on the engine and how often the source is recrawled. OpenAI says robots.txt changes for its search crawler apply in about a day, but third-party corrections depend on when those sites update. We confirm fixes across repeated runs before marking them done.
