Profound alternatives: what to use now that self-serve plans are gone

The best Profound alternatives for most brands are Otterly.AI for low-cost tracking, Scrunch for wide engine coverage, Semrush or Ahrefs if you already pay for one of them, and the free Google and Bing reports for everyone. Profound removed its self-serve brand plans in September 2026, so teams that cannot justify an enterprise contract now need a different tool, or a different way to track AI visibility altogether. This guide is written by an agency, not a tool vendor, so no product here is ours.

Quick answer

What are the best Profound alternatives?

The best Profound alternatives depend on budget and prompt count. Otterly.AI starts at $29 a month, Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit is $99, Scrunch starts at $300, and Ahrefs Brand Radar custom prompts start at $50. Start with Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, which are free, then buy only the prompt volume you need.

  • Profound now sells brands only a 7-day trial or a custom Enterprise plan.
  • Pick a tool by prompt count and engines, not by feature lists.
  • Free first-party reports from Google and Bing should come before any tracker.
  • Keep your prompt set frozen when you switch, or you lose your baseline.

01

What changed at Profound, and why are people looking for alternatives?

Profound stopped selling self-serve plans to brands. Its pricing page now lists only a free Trial and a custom Enterprise plan, and trakkr.ai's October 2026 pricing review reports that the Starter plan at $99 a month and the Growth plan at $399 a month were removed in mid-September 2026.

The timing matches Profound's own news. On 15 September 2026 the company announced a $180 million Series D at a $1.8 billion valuation and said it is expanding into AI Marketer, an agent that researches, writes and reports, plus an Ads Studio for paid campaigns. That is a clear move toward large marketing teams, and the pricing followed.

For a growth-stage brand the practical result is simple. The trial runs 50 prompts daily for 7 days across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, which is enough to look around but not to build a baseline. Anything longer means a sales call and a custom quote. trakkr.ai notes that agencies can still buy Agency Growth at $99 a month plus $399 a month per client workspace, so some brands will now meet Profound through an agency rather than directly.

02

Which Profound alternatives are worth comparing, and what do they cost?

Five tools cover most needs, and each publishes its price. The table uses each vendor's own pricing page as checked in October 2026; prices change often, so confirm before you buy. Peec AI is another widely used option, but we could not confirm its current prices, so it appears without one.

Engine coverage is the column to read first. A tool that skips the engine your buyers use is cheap for a reason, and some tools, Otterly.AI among them, charge extra for Claude, Gemini or AI Mode.

03

Which alternative fits which team?

Match the tool to how many prompts you will actually track and who will read the reports. Most brands need 25 to 100 buyer prompts to cover their categories, not thousands.

A founder-led startup or a single marketer should start with Otterly.AI Lite or a manual monthly run, then move up once the prompt list grows. A team already paying for Semrush or Ahrefs should test the add-on first, because one login and one bill matter more than a marginal feature. B2B SaaS brands that live or die on vendor shortlists usually need Claude and Perplexity in scope, which points to Scrunch or an Otterly add-on. Ecommerce brands should check whether shopping answers are covered at all; Profound lists ChatGPT Shopping only on its Enterprise plan.

Large brands with procurement, security review and several regions may still find Profound Enterprise the simplest choice. Its pricing page lists SSO, SOC 2 compliance, API access and a 24-hour support SLA, which smaller tools may not match.

  • Under 25 prompts, one market: free reports plus manual runs, or Otterly.AI Lite.
  • 25 to 100 prompts, already on an SEO suite: Semrush or Ahrefs add-on.
  • 100 to 400 prompts, four core engines: Otterly.AI Standard or Premium.
  • Claude, Gemini and AI Mode all required: Scrunch, or Otterly.AI with add-ons.
  • Many regions, SSO and procurement: Profound Enterprise or another enterprise contract.
04

Can you track AI visibility for free instead?

Partly, yes, and every program should start there. Google added a generative AI performance report to Search Console in June 2026, and Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance shows how often Copilot cites your pages and your citation share. Both are first-party data, which no third-party tracker can replace.

GA4 fills in the traffic side. A custom channel group matching chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com shows which landing pages AI referrals reach and whether they convert.

What the free reports cannot show is ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude answers where you are named but not clicked, or where a competitor is named instead. For that you need prompt runs. With fewer than about 25 prompts, a spreadsheet and a monthly manual run across each engine works, as long as you run each prompt more than once. Our AEO tools guide covers the free and paid options in more depth.

05

How do you switch from Profound without losing your baseline?

Export everything before the trial or contract ends, then rebuild the same prompt set word for word in the new tool. Changing a prompt changes the answer, so a reworded set makes before and after numbers meaningless.

Expect the numbers to move on day one even when nothing on your site changed. Tools sample at different times, from different locations and in different modes. Semrush found only 25% of cited sources overlapped between ChatGPT's reasoning modes, which shows how much a method change alone can shift a score. Run the old and new tool side by side for two to four weeks if you can, and treat the first month in the new tool as a fresh baseline.

  • Export prompts, tags, competitor lists and historical citation data as CSV.
  • Recreate prompts exactly, with the same country, language and engine settings.
  • Record the switch date in your change log so trend charts can be read honestly.
  • Re-check Search Console and Bing reports, which do not change with your tool.
06

What should you check before buying any AI visibility tool?

Check what it measures, how often, and whether you can verify it. A score you cannot trace back to a prompt, an engine, a date and a cited URL is hard to act on.

Ask each vendor the same questions. Does the tool use the live consumer product or an API, which can answer differently? How many times is each prompt run, and from which country? Are cited URLs stored, so you can see which comparison pages and alternatives pages are winning? Can you export raw data? And what happens to your history if you cancel?

Watch for scope creep too. Several tools now bundle content writing and site audits, and Profound's new direction is an agent that writes and reports. Those features may be useful, but they are a separate purchase decision from tracking. Buy tracking for measurement, and judge any content features on whether the output is accurate and answer-first, not on volume.

07

When do you not need a tool at all?

If you have not fixed the basics, a tracker will only confirm that you are invisible. Many brands that go shopping for Profound alternatives would get more from an AEO audit first: checking that OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot can reach the site, that key pages are indexed in Google and Bing, and that pricing, comparison and how-to pages answer questions directly.

You may also not need to own a tool if someone else runs tracking for you. A managed AI visibility tracking service brings its own subscription, keeps the prompt set fixed, reconciles tool data with Search Console and Bing, and reports monthly, so your team reads conclusions instead of dashboards. Market rates for that work are covered in our AEO pricing guide.

Finally, a tool cannot tell you why an answer is wrong. If ChatGPT or Perplexity repeats an outdated price or a discontinued product, the fix is in the sources those engines cite, and our page on wrong AI answers explains that process.

08

What are the common mistakes when replacing Profound?

The most common mistake is buying on price alone and losing the engines your buyers use. The second is tracking too many prompts, which produces dashboards nobody reads.

  • Choosing a tool without Claude or AI Mode coverage when your buyers use them.
  • Rewriting prompts during the switch and comparing the new numbers with the old.
  • Reading weekly swings as wins or losses; answers vary, so read monthly trends.
  • Ignoring the free Search Console and Bing AI reports because a paid tool exists.
  • Treating a visibility score as the goal instead of qualified AI referral traffic and leads.
  • Expecting any tool or vendor to make a citation happen; tools only measure.
09

How can we help if you are leaving Profound?

AEO Services Agency, the AEO and GEO practice of Greenwolf Tech Labs, is tool-neutral: we sell no tracker, so we can recommend the cheapest setup that covers your engines and prompts. We start with a free AEO visibility check, and any follow-on work is fixed-price.

We measure a fixed prompt set before and after changes, using your existing tool or ours, and combine it with Search Console, Bing and GA4 so the numbers can be checked. Measurement is only half the job; the AI search optimization work that improves those numbers is where most of the value sits. No one can promise a citation, but a clean baseline lets you see whether the work is paying off.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does Profound still have a cheap plan?

Not for brands. Profound's pricing page lists only a free 7-day Trial and a custom Enterprise plan, and trakkr.ai reports that the $99 Starter and $399 Growth plans were removed in mid-September 2026. Agencies can still buy an agency plan, according to the same review.

What is the cheapest Profound alternative?

Among tools with published prices, Otterly.AI Lite at $29 a month for 15 prompts is the lowest we found, and Ahrefs Brand Radar custom prompts start at $50. The genuinely free option is Google Search Console's generative AI report plus Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance and GA4, combined with manual prompt runs.

Is Semrush a good alternative to Profound?

It is a sensible one if you already use Semrush. The AI Visibility Toolkit costs $99 a month for 25 prompts, which suits a focused prompt set. Check which engines it covers for your prompts, because Semrush's documentation does not publish a full list.

Which Profound alternative tracks the most AI engines?

Of the tools with public prices, Scrunch lists ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Meta on all plans. Otterly.AI covers four engines and sells Claude, Gemini and AI Mode as add-ons. Profound Enterprise lists nine engines but needs a custom quote.

How many prompts should I track?

Most brands can start with 25 to 100 prompts grouped by topic and buyer stage. Fewer, well-chosen prompts that reflect real sales questions are more useful than thousands of generic ones, and they keep tool costs low.

Do I need an AI visibility tool if I hire an AEO agency?

Usually not separately. A good agency tracks a fixed prompt set with its own subscription or yours and reconciles it with Search Console and Bing data. Ask who owns the prompt history, so you keep your baseline if you change agency.
