AEO for home services companies that want to be the contractor AI names

AEO for home services is the work of making your company the one ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot name when a homeowner asks who to call for a new AC system, a burst pipe at 11pm or a roof after a hailstorm. We work with owners and marketing leads at HVAC, plumbing, roofing, electrical and remodeling companies, from single-shop operators to multi-trade and franchise groups, in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and beyond. You get a baseline of the prompts your customers type, a map of the directories and pages cited in your service area, cleaner listings, rebuilt service, cost and area pages, and monthly reporting that follows AI referrals to booked jobs.

Quick answer

How does an HVAC, plumbing or roofing company get recommended by ChatGPT and Google's AI answers?

AEO for home services starts with the sources assistants read for local trades: Google Business Profile, Angi, BBB, Yelp, Expertise.com and ConsumerAffairs, plus plain-text service, cost, license and service-area pages on your own site. Keep every fact identical, earn real reviews that name the job, and track local prompts monthly. No one can promise a citation.

  • Directories and city best-of lists hold most homeowner prompts, so listings matter as much as your website.
  • AI answers name only a few contractors, and even page-one companies are left out most of the time.
  • Cost, license, warranty and emergency pages written in plain text give assistants facts they can repeat.
  • License-number display rules and the FTC review rule limit what contractors can publish and ask for.

01

Which home service companies is AEO built for, and who should skip it?

It suits trades where one job is worth enough to justify research: HVAC replacement, heat pumps, water heaters, repiping, roof replacement, solar-ready electrical upgrades, foundation repair and remodeling. It also suits multi-trade shops and franchise or private-equity-backed platforms whose AI answers mix up brand names after an acquisition, list the wrong service area or still show a phone number that was retired.

It is a weaker fit for an owner-operator with a full schedule and no plan to grow, or for a company with an unclaimed Google Business Profile and a handful of reviews. In that case the groundwork comes first, and our page on AEO for local businesses covers it for any storefront. If your customers are landlords and property managers rather than homeowners, our real estate page covers the portal and listing sources that buyers lean on.

02

Which homeowner prompts do we test, and who wins them today?

We test six prompt shapes in every home services baseline, because each is won by a different kind of source. The middle column summarizes the top web results we checked on 23 October 2026 with a US-based search tool for the first three prompts; it is a snapshot of the pages answer engines can draw on, not a record of any single ChatGPT answer. The last three rows describe the source types those prompts typically draw on rather than a dated check.

Two patterns stand out. City best-of lists, lead marketplaces and national franchise brands hold the recommendation prompts, and cost questions are partly answered by spam pages on hijacked subdomains of unrelated sites. A local company that publishes an honest cost page, with ranges and what changes the price, has a real opening there.

What do citation studies say about home services answers?

Directories carry heavy weight, especially in ChatGPT. A vendor study by Cheers, the Home Services AI Visibility Index published 2 September 2026, tracked 13 home services companies and 183 locations across 958,754 answers in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity. Across its 100-metro baseline the most cited domains were google.com, Expertise.com, Angi and BBB, and ChatGPT sent 44.7% of its citations to directories and review platforms. A vendor study by BrightLocal published in August 2026 found Google Business Profile made up 54% of directory citations for plumbers, ahead of Yelp at 13.8%.

Ranking well in Google is not enough. A vendor study by Riptide Growth, published 7 October 2026, took the first HVAC company in Google's organic results for 13 US metros and ran five buyer prompts per company in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity: the companies were named in 80 of 260 answers, while serviceagent.ai and consumeraffairs.com were cited far more often. Read together, the studies say your own site does get cited, but the shortlist is mostly assembled from listings and city lists. That is why our work on local recommendations starts with listing accuracy and review depth before new content.

04

What must a contractor have to compete in AI answers?

A consistent set of facts in every place an assistant looks. That means one company name, phone number, address or service area, hours, license numbers and list of services across your site, Google Business Profile, Yelp, BBB, Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, Nextdoor, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, plus HomeStars in Canada and Checkatrade in the United Kingdom. Conflicts between these are a common cause of wrong AI answers, such as a closed branch still listed or Saturday hours that changed last summer.

On your own site, assistants need pages that settle one question each in plain text, open with a direct answer and carry a visible last-updated date. Our AEO content writing service rebuilds these pages, and the structured data that ties them together, such as HVACBusiness, Plumber or RoofingContractor schema markup with sameAs links to your profiles, sits with our technical AEO work.

  • One page per high-value job, such as AC replacement or tankless water heaters, with who it suits, brands installed, timeline and what affects the price
  • A cost page with honest ranges and financing terms, updated each season
  • A license, insurance and warranty page with license numbers and warranty length in text
  • An emergency page with hours, call-out fees and typical response windows
  • One page per service area with real local detail, such as permit rules, housing stock or climate issues
  • Reviews on Google and at least one trade directory, earned from real customers
05

What advertising and review rules limit AEO for contractors?

Several, and they shape what we publish. In California, Business and Professions Code section 7030.5 requires licensed contractors to show their license number in all forms of advertising, and the Contractors State License Board treats websites and online listings as advertising. Other states have their own display rules, so we put license numbers on every service page and listing where your board requires them, which also gives assistants a verifiable fact.

Reviews carry the most risk. In the United States, the FTC Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule (16 CFR 465) bans fake and AI-generated reviews and buying positive ones, and we send review requests to every customer rather than only the happy ones. Lead marketplaces are not risk-free either: in January 2023 the FTC proposed an order requiring HomeAdvisor to pay up to $7.2 million over claims about the leads it sold to service providers. In the United Kingdom the DMCC Act has banned fake reviews since 6 April 2025. This is not legal advice; your licensing board or counsel has the final word.

06

How is AEO for home services different for owner-operators, multi-trade shops and franchises?

The method is the same, but the weight shifts. An owner-operator wins mostly through Google Business Profile, Angi and BBB, reviews that name the job and the town, and three or four strong service and cost pages. A multi-trade shop also has to make each trade findable on its own, because a company known for plumbing is often missing from HVAC prompts if the site treats heating as a footnote.

Franchise brands and roll-ups have the hardest problem: dozens of listings that drift apart, location pages built from one template, and acquired companies whose old names and phone numbers still appear in AI answers. We audit every location's facts first, then build location pages that differ in substance. When an answer still describes a brand you retired, our process for fixing wrong AI answers applies. For groups operating across Canada or Australia, local directories and spelling change, so we keep separate prompt sets per country.

07

How do we measure AEO for home services against booked jobs?

We tie AI visibility to booked jobs, not screenshots. Each month we run a fixed prompt set for your trades and towns in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Mode and record whether you are named, how you are described, which competitors and directories appear and which URL is cited. That gives you a citation share per trade and service area; our AI visibility tracking service runs the same method on its own.

In GA4 we separate referral sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com and follow them to online booking, call clicks and estimate requests. Most homeowners phone rather than fill in a form, so we match call tracking numbers on the website to AI referral sessions and ask your dispatch team to record how new customers heard of you. Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance adds Copilot citation data, and Search Console shows clicks from Google's AI features.

08

What does the first 90 days of AEO for home services look like?

Days 1 to 30 are diagnosis: the full prompt set, a map of the directories and city lists cited in your area, a listing audit across every location, a review of service and cost pages, and a check that OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot can reach your site. The output reads like an AEO audit with a ranked fix list. Days 31 to 60 correct listings and hours, add license details, and rewrite the two or three service and cost pages homeowners ask about most, timed ahead of your peak season.

Days 61 to 90 cover reviews, mentions and measurement. We set up a review request flow your technicians can run at job close, pitch the city lists and local publications your prompts already cite, publish service-area pages in priority order and rerun the prompt set against the day-one baseline. Listing fixes can show within weeks; review depth and list placements take longer. The ongoing program after that is our AI search optimization service.

09

What mistakes do home service companies make with AI search?

The most common is treating AI answers as a website problem when most cited sources are listings and city lists. A new site cannot fix an Angi profile with an old service area or a BBB page under a previous company name. The second is buying placement on pay-to-play best-of lists that assistants and homeowners increasingly ignore, instead of earning a place on lists that already appear in your prompts.

Other mistakes repeat across audits: hiding every price behind a free estimate, publishing city pages that differ only by town name, leaving license numbers off the site, blocking AI crawlers through a default Cloudflare rule, and asking only happy customers for reviews. If you are comparing agencies, our guide to AEO pricing sets out published market ranges, and our ChatGPT SEO page covers the ChatGPT-specific side, including how Google AI Overviews differ.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is AEO for home services?

It is the work of getting an HVAC, plumbing, roofing, electrical or remodeling company named and described accurately when homeowners ask AI assistants who to hire or what a job costs. It covers listings, reviews, service and cost pages, structured data and monthly tracking of the prompts homeowners use.

Is AEO different from SEO for contractors?

It builds on the same foundations, and Google says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO. The difference is emphasis: assistants name only a few contractors, so listing accuracy, presence on city lists, review depth and plain-text price and license facts carry more weight than another blog post.

Which directories matter most for contractors in AI answers?

Google Business Profile leads, and a vendor study by Cheers found Expertise.com, Angi and BBB among the most cited domains for home services. Yelp, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack and ConsumerAffairs also appear often, with HomeStars in Canada and Checkatrade in the UK.

Should HVAC and roofing companies publish prices?

Assistants can only repeat what they can read, and cost questions are among the most common homeowner prompts. Publishing honest ranges, what is included and what changes the price usually helps, and you can still say an on-site estimate sets the final quote.

Do I need to show my contractor license number online?

In California, Business and Professions Code section 7030.5 requires license numbers in all advertising, which the licensing board applies to websites and listings, and other states have their own rules. A visible license number also gives assistants a fact they can check. This is not legal advice.

Do Angi and HomeAdvisor help with ChatGPT visibility?

They are among the cited sources in vendor studies of home services answers, so an accurate, reviewed profile there helps. A profile is different from buying leads; we judge each platform by whether it appears in your own prompt results before recommending paid tiers.

How long does AEO take for a home services company?

Listing, hours and license corrections can show in prompt results within weeks. Reviews, city list placements and new service pages usually take a quarter or more, so we judge progress on the 90-day rerun of the baseline and plan around your busy season.

Does AEO work for franchises and multi-location contractors?

Yes, and it often matters more, because listing errors and old brand names repeat across every location after acquisitions. We audit each location's facts, build location pages that differ in substance and report citation share and booked jobs per location.

What does AEO for a contractor cost?

We quote a fixed price after a free AEO visibility check, based on the number of trades, locations and listings that need work. Our AEO pricing guide sets out published market ranges if you want a benchmark first.

Can you promise ChatGPT will recommend my company?

No one can promise a citation, and OpenAI does not publish how ChatGPT chooses local businesses. We improve the sources answers draw on and report citation share and AI-referred jobs monthly so you can judge the return.
