AEO for restaurants and restaurant groups that want to be the AI pick
AEO for restaurants is the work of making sure that when a diner asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI Mode where to eat tonight, your venue is one of the two or three it names, with the right hours, menu and booking link. We work with owners, marketing leads and heads of growth at independent restaurants, multi-venue groups and franchise brands. You get a baseline of the prompts diners type in your cities, a map of the listings and guides that win them today, fixed menus, listings and review profiles, and monthly reporting that follows AI referrals to bookings and orders.

Quick answer
How does a restaurant get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Mode?
AEO for restaurants starts with the sources assistants read: a complete Google Business Profile, Yelp, Tripadvisor and OpenTable or Resy listings, recent strong reviews, local food guides, and a website with menus, hours and dietary details in plain text. Keep search crawlers allowed and track diner prompts monthly. No one can promise a citation.
- AI assistants name only a few restaurants per answer, so being absent is the default, not a lower rank.
- Yelp, Tripadvisor, OpenTable and local food guides carry much of the weight in dining answers.
- ChatGPT and AI Mode can now book tables through partners, so your reservation listing is part of AEO.
- Menus, hours and allergen details must be text that matches every listing, or answers go wrong.
Which restaurants is this built for, and who should skip it?
It suits restaurants where a diner's choice is made before they arrive: destination venues, groups with three or more sites, franchise brands, and places in busy dining cities where twenty venues compete for the same date-night or brunch question. It also suits brands whose AI answers are already wrong, quoting closed locations, old menus or weekend hours that changed a year ago.
It is a poor fit for a single venue with no reviews yet, or one that relies almost entirely on walk-in foot traffic from an office block. Fix the Google Business Profile and earn reviews first; our page on local businesses covers that groundwork. If your venues sit inside hotels, the guest-facing side is covered on our hospitality page for hotels, and the wider mechanics of local recommendations in AI answers have their own use-case page.
Why does AEO for restaurants matter more than for other local businesses?
Because dining answers are short and the booking now happens inside the answer. SOCi's restaurant benchmarks, published in August 2026 from its 2026 Local Visibility Index of about 350,000 locations, found the average restaurant brand appears in Google's local 3-Pack 24.3% of the time but is recommended by ChatGPT only 5.3% of the time. A diner who asks for a quiet Italian place near the theater gets two or three names, not a map of twenty.
The step after the recommendation has moved too. PYMNTS reported on 10 August 2026 that Yelp added reservations and waitlists inside ChatGPT, on top of an existing integration that shows Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details in the chat. Google's I/O 2026 notes say restaurant bookings in AI Mode run through OpenTable, Resy and Tock. If your venue is not bookable on one of those, an assistant that recommends you may still send the diner to a competitor it can book.

Which diner prompts do we test, and who wins them today?
We test six prompt shapes for every restaurant baseline, run for each city and neighborhood you serve. For three of them we checked the top web results on 26 October 2026 with a US-based search tool; this shows who holds the pages answer engines search, not a record of any single ChatGPT answer.
The pattern is clear. City magazines and food guides (InsideHook, Chowhound, Westword, Tribeza), OpenTable's own feature lists and niche directories such as diningout.com and atly.com hold the open questions, and several results for the Austin query were low-quality pages on unrelated domains. That is a gap a restaurant with good press and accurate listings can fill. Questions about a named venue, its menu, prices or allergens, are won by whoever states the facts most clearly, which should be you.
| Diner prompt | Who leads today | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| best Italian restaurant in Chicago for a date night | insidehook.com, opentable.com feature list, chowhound.com, birchrestaurant.com (checked 26 Oct 2026) | Coverage in city guides, an OpenTable listing, reviews that mention the occasion |
| best brunch spots in Austin with outdoor seating | camillestyles.com, tribeza.com, plus low-quality pages on unrelated domains (checked 26 Oct 2026) | A brunch page stating patio, hours and menu in text, plus local press |
| gluten free friendly restaurants in Denver | diningout.com, atly.com, westword.com, hoodline.com (checked 26 Oct 2026) | A dietary page with honest gluten-free and allergen detail, and niche directory listings |
| restaurants open late near me that take reservations | Google Business Profile, Yelp and booking platforms | Correct late hours everywhere and a live OpenTable, Resy, Tock or Yelp booking link |
| is [restaurant] good for a group of 12 | Reviews and your own private dining page | A private dining page with capacity, set menus and how to book |
| [restaurant] menu prices | Your site if the menu is text; otherwise delivery apps and old photos | An HTML menu with current prices and a last-updated date |
What do citation studies say about restaurant answers?
Listings and review platforms carry the most weight. BrightLocal's August 2026 study of 1.97 million citations across AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT found Google Business Profile was the largest single source, that Yelp appeared in about 80% of ChatGPT's local answers, and that ChatGPT's top local sources were Yelp, Tripadvisor, OpenTable, BBB and Angi. Three of those five are dining platforms.
Ratings act as a filter. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index found locations recommended by ChatGPT averaged 4.3 stars. Read together, the studies say that a restaurant's own site matters for the facts, but the decision to include you at all leans on listings and reviews. That is why our AI search optimization program works on profiles and press alongside your pages, and why digital PR aimed at local food writers sits in most restaurant plans.
Which restaurant pages and listings should be fixed first?
The ones that settle a diner's question in plain text. Most restaurant sites hide the menu in a PDF or an image, list hours in a footer graphic and say nothing about dietary needs. We rebuild them as answer-first content: one page per venue, an HTML menu, a dietary page and a private dining page, each with a visible last-updated date.
On the technical side, Restaurant and Menu schema markup describes cuisine, price range, hours and reservation links in a form crawlers parse, and our technical AEO work checks it alongside AI crawler access for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot. Schema is not a citation lever by itself; it helps when the visible page already says the same thing.
- One page per location with address, hours, holiday hours, parking and nearest transit
- An HTML menu with prices, not a PDF or photo, updated when the menu changes
- A dietary page that says plainly what is gluten-free, vegan or nut-free and how cross-contact is handled
- Private dining and events pages with capacity, set menus and booking steps
- Google Business Profile, Yelp, Tripadvisor and OpenTable, Resy or Tock listings matched to the site
What advertising and food rules limit restaurant content?
Dietary and review claims are regulated, and assistants repeat what you publish. The FDA says restaurants making a gluten-free claim on menus should be consistent with its definition of under 20 parts per million of gluten, so write "gluten-free" only where it holds and say "made without gluten ingredients" or describe cross-contact risk where it does not. In the United States, chains of 20 or more locations selling substantially the same menu must show calories on menus and menu boards under the FDA menu labeling rule; keep online menus consistent with the boards.
In the United Kingdom, Food Standards Agency guidance says written allergen information on the 14 mandated allergens should always be available for non-prepacked food, including online sales. The FTC Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule (16 CFR 465, in force since 21 October 2024) bans fake and purchased reviews, including AI-generated ones, so review requests must go to real guests with no condition on rating. Canada and Australia have their own fake-review penalties. This is not legal advice; check claims with your counsel.
How do we measure AEO for restaurants against bookings?
We tie AI visibility to covers and orders, not screenshots. Each month we run a fixed prompt set per city in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Mode and record whether each venue is named, how it is described, which competitors appear and which source is cited. That gives a citation share per city; our AI visibility tracking service runs the same method on its own.
In GA4 we separate referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com and follow them to booking clicks and online orders. Search Console's generative AI report shows impressions from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance adds Copilot citation data. Bookings made inside ChatGPT through Yelp or OpenTable may not pass through your site, so we also compare reservation platform reports month on month.
What does the first 90 days of restaurant AEO look like?
Days 1 to 30 are diagnosis: the full prompt set for each city, a map of cited guides and listings, a check of every profile for hours, menu and booking link, and a crawler and schema review. The output reads like an AEO audit with a ranked fix list, and it usually surfaces wrong AI answers about closed sites or old hours that need fixing at the source.
Days 31 to 60 ship the fastest fixes: listings corrected and matched, HTML menus and dietary pages live, location pages rebuilt and booking links added. Days 61 to 90 move to reviews within the rules, pitches to local food writers and guide editors, and a rerun of the prompt set against the baseline. Listing fixes can show within weeks; press coverage and review volume take longer.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is AEO for restaurants?
It is the work of getting your restaurant named, described accurately and linked when diners ask AI assistants where to eat. It covers listings, reviews, menus, booking links and local press, plus monthly tracking of the prompts diners actually type.
How do I get my restaurant recommended by ChatGPT?
Make sure ChatGPT can find consistent facts about you on Yelp, Tripadvisor, OpenTable and your own site, with strong recent reviews and correct hours. Keep OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt, publish your menu as text and be bookable on a platform ChatGPT connects to. No one can promise a recommendation.
Is AEO for restaurants different from restaurant SEO?
It builds on the same foundations, since Google says optimizing for AI search is still SEO. The difference is emphasis: AI answers name only a few venues, so listings, ratings, booking integrations and guide coverage decide inclusion more than page rankings do.
Do Yelp reviews matter for AI answers?
Yes. BrightLocal's 2026 study found Yelp in about 80% of ChatGPT's local answers, and Yelp feeds reviews, photos and reservations into ChatGPT directly. Ask real guests for reviews without conditions, and reply to them, since review text describes your venue to the assistant.
Should my menu be a PDF or a web page?
A web page. Assistants and crawlers read HTML text far more reliably than PDFs or images, and a text menu lets you answer price, dish and dietary questions directly. Keep a PDF for printing if you like, but make the HTML version the main one.
Does a restaurant group need a page per location?
Yes. Each venue needs its own page with address, hours, menu differences and booking link, matched to its own Google Business Profile. One shared page for several sites is a common cause of assistants quoting the wrong hours or a closed location.
How long does restaurant AEO take to show results?
Listing and hours fixes can show in prompt results within weeks. Press coverage, guide inclusion and review volume usually take a quarter or more, so we judge progress on the 90-day rerun of the baseline.
Can you promise my restaurant will appear in AI Overviews or ChatGPT?
No one can promise a citation, and neither OpenAI nor Google publishes how venues are chosen. We improve the inputs answers draw on and report citation share and AI referral bookings monthly so you can judge the return.
What does AEO cost for a restaurant?
We quote a fixed price after a free AEO visibility check, based on how many venues, cities and listings need work. Our AEO pricing guide sets out published market ranges if you want a benchmark first.
