Logistics and freight

AEO for logistics companies, 3PLs, freight brokers and forwarders

AEO for logistics is the work of getting your 3PL, brokerage, forwarder or freight technology product named and described correctly when a shipper asks ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot who should move, store or track their freight. We work with marketing leads, heads of growth and founders at logistics providers and supply chain software companies selling into the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, the UAE and Singapore. You get a baseline of the prompts your shippers type, a map of who is cited today, rebuilt service, lane and capability pages, and monthly reporting tied to quote requests.

Quick answer

How does a logistics company get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews?

AEO for logistics starts with the sources AI answers already use: 3PL listicles, fulfillment marketplaces, trade rankings such as the Inbound Logistics Top 100, review sites and your own pages. Publish plain-text pages per service, mode, lane and capability, keep FMCSA and FMC details consistent, allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, and track prompts monthly. No one can promise a citation.

  • Shipper prompts are very specific (mode, lane, commodity, temperature, channel), which favors providers who write their capabilities down.
  • In the top web results we checked, vendor-written 3PL lists and dated ratings pages hold the broad prompts, so the ground is soft.
  • Trade rankings, review profiles and published numbers give assistants third-party facts to repeat.
  • We report citation share and AI-referred quote requests, not screenshots.

01

Who is AEO for logistics built for, and who should skip it?

It suits five kinds of company. Ecommerce and B2B 3PLs that want to be named when a brand asks for a fulfillment partner with a given channel, SKU profile or warehouse location. Freight brokers and asset-light carriers selling truckload, LTL, drayage or specialized freight. Freight forwarders and NVOCCs who want to appear for lane prompts such as China to the US or India to the UAE. Cold chain, hazmat and white-glove specialists whose niche is exactly what shippers type. And logistics software vendors (TMS, WMS, visibility platforms), whose buyers behave much like the software buyers on our B2B SaaS page.

It is a poor fit for an owner-operator with one truck and load boards as the only sales channel, or a provider with no website text beyond a quote form. In that case a basic site and a complete Google Business Profile come first. It is also not a replacement for the sales relationships that win most contract logistics; it decides whether you reach the shortlist that sales then works. Providers that run warehouses for manufacturers or ship for ecommerce brands should read those industry pages too, because their customers' prompts shape yours.

02

Which shipper prompts do we test, and who wins them today?

Logistics prompts split by stage. Discovery prompts ask for the best provider for a mode, lane or channel. Comparison prompts set two providers or two models side by side (3PL vs in-house, broker vs asset carrier, FCL vs LCL). Cost prompts ask what fulfillment or a lane typically costs. Due-diligence prompts check a named company: reviews, whether a broker is legitimate, whether a forwarder is licensed. The table summarizes the top web results we checked on 27 October 2026 with a US-based search tool for four discovery prompts. It shows who holds the ground that answer engines search through query fan-out; it is not a record of any single ChatGPT answer.

Three patterns stand out. First, 3PLs and fulfillment platforms write most of the 'best 3PL' lists themselves, often ranking their own service or partners. Second, some top results are stale: the FreightWaves Ratings page on LTL brokers that ranked for our small-business prompt is dated September 2022. Third, the forwarder prompt returned spam pages hosted on a university wiki and an unrelated e-portfolio site. Stale and spammy results mean there is room for a provider that publishes specific, current, checkable answers.

03

What do citation studies say about logistics answers?

We found no independent citation study covering logistics as a whole, so we combine one vertical study with cross-industry data and our own prompt runs. FreightWaves reported on 12 August 2026 that LeadCoverage, an Atlanta agency that markets freight and supply chain companies, logged 1,058 AI citations over a quarter of weekly press releases, with ChatGPT accounting for roughly 90%, and that releases leading with a specific, economically relevant number earned 3.5 times more citations than releases without one. Treat it as a vendor study by LeadCoverage, but the lesson matches what we see: assistants cite whoever publishes the number.

Cross-industry, a vendor study by Peec AI covering 30 million sources (March 2026) put Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Wikipedia, Forbes and G2 among the most cited domains in AI search. For logistics that means LinkedIn posts from your operations leaders, honest replies in shipper and seller communities, and trade press coverage carry more weight than most providers expect. Our guide to AI citations explains how engines pick sources in more detail.

04

What must a 3PL or freight company have to compete in AI answers?

A provider needs its capabilities written as plain text on its own site, the same facts on the third-party sources assistants read, and specific numbers worth quoting. Most logistics sites fail the first test: services pages say 'end-to-end solutions' for every mode, warehouse locations sit in an interactive map crawlers cannot read, and certifications live in a logo strip. An assistant asked for a food-grade 3PL in New Jersey with Shopify integration cannot name you if none of those words appear in text on a crawlable page.

Off-site, the sources differ by segment. 3PLs benefit from trade rankings such as the Inbound Logistics Top 100 3PL Providers list (published each July), fulfillment marketplaces and directories, and Google reviews per warehouse. Brokers and carriers need consistent FMCSA registration details, review profiles and coverage in roundups. Software vendors need G2 and Capterra. Earning a place in those lists is a digital PR job, and your company name, MC or DOT numbers, licences and addresses should match everywhere, because mismatches are a common cause of wrong AI answers.

  • One page per service and mode (fulfillment, truckload, LTL, drayage, ocean, air, customs), opening with what you move and what you do not
  • Lane and region pages with origin, destination, transit options and handoffs written as text
  • Capability pages for temperature control, hazmat, oversized, kitting or returns, with the certifications you can document
  • Warehouse pages with address, square footage you can verify, channels supported and integrations
  • A cost explainer that states what changes the price, without quoting rates you cannot honor
  • Organization and LocalBusiness schema markup with sameAs links to your official profiles
05

What advertising and licensing rules limit AEO for logistics?

Every page an assistant reads is still advertising, and freight has rules that marketing copy often breaks. In the US, 49 CFR 371.7 says a broker shall not represent its operations to be those of a carrier and that any advertising shall show the broker status of the operation; a page written to win 'trucking company near me' must not blur that line. Ocean freight forwarders and US-based NVOCCs must hold a Federal Maritime Commission licence under 46 CFR 515.3 and file proof of financial responsibility, so a forwarder page should state its licence accurately because shippers and assistants check it.

Sustainability claims carry growing risk. Directive (EU) 2024/825, which member states must apply from 27 September 2026, prohibits claiming that a product has a neutral, reduced or positive emissions impact based on greenhouse gas offsetting, so 'carbon-neutral shipping' backed only by offsets needs rewriting for EU audiences. Review requests fall under the FTC Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule in the US and the DMCC Act in the United Kingdom, so no paid, filtered or AI-written reviews. This is not legal advice; your compliance lead has the final word.

06

Which logistics pages should be rebuilt first?

The pages that settle a shipper's question and that only you can answer precisely. For a 3PL that usually means the two or three channels or verticals that bring the most margin, the warehouse locations you want filled and a pricing model explainer. For a broker it means mode pages, lanes you run often and a page on how you vet carriers. For a forwarder it means trade lane pages and a customs page. For a software vendor, fair comparison pages against the platforms you lose deals to.

Each page opens with a two-sentence direct answer, names the modes, regions and commodities, states what you do not handle, and carries a last-updated date. Our AEO content writing team writes in that answer-first content format, and our technical AEO work checks that quote tools, tracking portals and location maps do not hide the explanatory text from crawlers. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, and a default firewall rule can block it without anyone noticing, so we check server logs for each crawler. Publishing your own operating numbers, such as on-time rates or dock-to-stock times you can document, gives assistants something specific to cite.

07

How do we measure AEO for logistics against quote requests?

We measure what moves revenue, not just mentions. Each month we run a fixed prompt set by segment, mode and lane in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, and record whether you are named, how you are described, which competitors appear and which URL is cited. Our AI visibility tracking service runs the same method for teams that only want measurement, and reports citation share against named competitors.

In GA4 we separate referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com and follow them to quote requests, RFQ submissions and calls; where your CRM allows, we tie them to won freight or signed warehouse contracts. Carrier sign-ups and job applicants are tracked separately so they do not inflate shipper results. Search Console's generative AI report and Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance add first-party data for Google and Copilot. Providers selling into Canada and Australia should watch Copilot closely, since StatCounter's data shows Bing holds its largest share there and in the US among the markets we serve.

08

What does the first 90 days of AEO for logistics look like?

Days 1 to 30 are diagnosis. We run the full prompt set, map cited sources for your modes and lanes, inventory service, lane and warehouse pages, check FMCSA, FMC and directory details for consistency and confirm crawler access; the output reads like an AEO audit with a ranked fix list. Days 31 to 60 are the fastest fixes: the priority service and lane pages rewritten as answer-first text, capability and certification facts moved out of images, and profiles aligned with the site.

Days 61 to 90 move off-site and into measurement. We pitch trade editors and roundup authors, brief your team on review requests within the rules, help you publish one dataset worth citing, and rerun the prompt set against the day-one baseline. Page fixes can show within weeks; rankings, lists and review volume take longer. Providers working across several countries or languages should add our international AEO plan, which covers hreflang and local engines.

09

What mistakes do logistics marketers make with AI search?

The most common is generic copy. Hundreds of providers describe themselves as 'end-to-end supply chain solutions', and an assistant has no reason to name any one of them for a specific prompt. The second is a self-ranking 'best 3PLs' list with your company first; our check found many of these already, Google's spam policies now say they apply to generative AI responses, per a Search Engine Roundtable report, and buyers recognize the pattern. The third is hiding every number behind a quote form.

Others recur in audits: MC numbers or company names that differ between the site, FMCSA records and directories after a merger; warehouse addresses that exist only in a map widget; 'carbon-neutral' claims that rest on offsets; and treating AI search as separate from SEO, when Google's own guidance says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. If you are comparing agency quotes, our AEO pricing guide sets out published market ranges, and if an assistant already describes your services wrongly, our page on wrong AI answers covers the fix.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is AEO for logistics?

It is answer engine optimization applied to 3PLs, freight brokers, forwarders, carriers and logistics software vendors: making sure AI assistants name your company and describe your services correctly when shippers ask who to use. It builds on SEO, with more weight on capability pages, trade rankings, review profiles and published numbers.

Can a mid-size 3PL show up in ChatGPT against the big names?

Yes, mostly for specific prompts rather than broad 'best 3PL' questions. A provider that states its channels, SKU types, locations and certifications in plain text gives an assistant concrete reasons to name it for a matching shipper.

Which sources do AI assistants use for logistics recommendations?

In the top web results we checked on 27 October 2026, vendor-written 3PL lists, fulfill.com, fitsmallbusiness.com, Capterra, forwarder blogs and an older FreightWaves Ratings page held most positions. Cross-industry studies by Peec AI also put LinkedIn, Reddit and G2 among the most cited domains.

Do freight brokers need to state broker status on AI-friendly pages?

Yes. Under 49 CFR 371.7, a US broker must not represent itself as a carrier, and its advertising must show its broker status. Pages written for AI search are still advertising, so keep that wording clear. This is not legal advice.

Should logistics websites block AI crawlers?

Block training crawlers if you wish, but keep search crawlers allowed. OpenAI says blocking GPTBot only opts out of training, while sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers.

Does getting on the Inbound Logistics Top 100 help with AI search?

It can help, because trade rankings are independent pages that assistants may read when building a shortlist. It is one input among several; your own capability pages, review profiles and press coverage still need to say the same things.

How long does AEO take for a logistics company?

Page fixes such as service and lane pages can show in prompt results within weeks. Trade rankings, roundup inclusion and review volume usually take a quarter or more, so we judge progress on the 90-day rerun of the baseline.

Can you promise our company will be recommended by AI assistants?

No one can promise a citation, and no assistant publishes how it ranks sources. We improve the inputs answers draw on and report citation share and AI-referred quote requests monthly so you can judge the return.

What does AEO for a logistics company cost?

We quote a fixed price after a free AEO visibility check, based on how many modes, lanes, locations and pages need work. Our AEO pricing guide lists published market ranges if you want a benchmark first.
