AEO for pharma brands that need AI answers to get the drug right

AEO for pharma is the work of making sure that when a patient, caregiver or prescriber asks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot or Claude about a condition or a medicine, the answer describes your product accurately, within its approved use, and cites sources you can stand behind. We work with brand, digital and medical communications teams at pharmaceutical and biotech companies. You get a baseline of the prompts patients and HCPs type, a map of the sites those answers lean on, MLR-ready page rewrites, a correction route for wrong answers, and monthly reporting. This page is not medical or legal advice.

Quick answer

How does a pharma brand get described accurately by ChatGPT and other AI assistants?

AEO for pharma means testing the condition, comparison, cost and safety prompts people ask, finding which sources the answers draw on (press, drug references, discount sites, journals), then publishing clear, fair-balanced, MLR-approved pages and correcting third-party errors. Keep OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot allowed and track answers monthly. No one can promise a citation.

  • Patient and HCP questions about drugs are now answered inside AI chat, often without a click to the brand site.
  • In the prompts we checked, discount-card sites, health systems, journals and news outlets held the top results, not manufacturers.
  • Accurate, plain-text product, safety, access and disease pages are the assets assistants can quote.
  • Every change runs through your MLR review; we plan the work around that cycle, not against it.

01

Who is AEO for pharma built for, and who should skip it?

It suits pharmaceutical and biotech companies with a marketed product or a late-stage pipeline, a brand or medical team that owns digital channels, and a recurring problem: AI answers that misstate an indication, repeat an old safety point, quote a list price nobody pays or leave the product out of a treatment comparison entirely. It also suits companies preparing a launch, where the first months decide what assistants learn to say; our page on AEO for product launches covers that sequence.

It is a poor fit if you cannot get content through medical, legal and regulatory review within a quarter, because almost every fix touches regulated copy. Hospital systems, clinics and telehealth providers have a different problem set (provider directories, locations, reviews), which our healthcare page covers. Pure contract manufacturers and CDMOs selling to procurement teams are closer to the B2B playbook on our manufacturers page.

02

Why are drug questions moving into AI answers?

Because the questions people ask about medicines are long, comparative and personal, which is exactly what assistants handle well. Conductor's analysis of 118 million keywords (April 2025) found Google AI Overviews appeared on 25% of pharmaceutical keywords, and ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini answer the same questions without showing ten blue links at all.

The commercial pressure is rising too. In July 2026 the FDA listed a proposed rule, RIN 0910-AJ14, titled Transparency in Direct-to-Consumer Advertising, that would remove the adequate provision option for broadcast drug ads under 21 CFR 202.1; a Foley Hoag alert dated 7 July 2026 says the notice is expected in December 2026 and that the change could make broadcast ads prohibitively long and expensive. If TV loses its shortcut, more of the patient's research happens in search and chat, and the accuracy of those answers starts to matter as much as media weight.

03

Which pharma prompts do we test, and who wins them today?

We test prompts in four groups: condition and treatment options, product comparisons, cost and access, and safety. For three common prompt shapes we recorded the top web results we checked on 28 October 2026 with a US-based search tool. This is a snapshot of the pages answer engines search and summarize, not a record of any single ChatGPT answer, but the pattern was clear: no manufacturer site appeared in the top results for any of the three.

That gap is the opportunity and the risk. A prescription discount site explaining your price, a UK online pharmacy comparing your product with a competitor, or a syndicated local TV health segment can become the source an assistant quotes. The brand cannot control those pages, but it can publish the accurate, quotable version and work to get third parties corrected.

Prompt shape (example)Who led the top web results on 28 Oct 2026What a brand needs
Product vs product: "Ozempic vs Mounjaro which is better for weight loss"Syndicated local TV health stories (wrtv.com, kshb.com, ktnv.com, wptv.com), UK online pharmacies (theindependentpharmacy.co.uk, chemist-4-u.com), Scripps Health, telehealth weight-loss brandsFair-balanced product pages with trial results stated plainly, and accurate coverage in health press
Treatment options: "best biologic for plaque psoriasis"Cochrane, EMJ, HCPLive, RheumNow, medRxiv preprintsPublished, indexed evidence and an HCP section that states data in crawlable text
Cost and access: "is there a generic for Eliquis, cost without insurance"GoodRx, SingleCare, RxSaver, Medical News TodayA plain-text savings and access page with eligibility terms and a last-updated date
Safety: "long-term side effects of [drug]"Not checked today; in our audits these usually draw on drug references and health publishersSafety information in HTML, consistent with the label and Drugs.com style references
HCP: "first-line treatment for [condition] guidelines"Not checked today; typically society guidelines and journalsGuideline-aligned medical content and accurate PubMed-indexed publications
04

What do citation studies say about pharma in AI answers?

Citation share follows what patients research and what the press covers, not ad spend. A vendor study by 5W, a PR firm, published 19 June 2026, ran more than 60 patient and consumer prompts five times each in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. It found Eli Lilly held an estimated 12.5% of pharma citations and Novo Nordisk 11.5%, ahead of Pfizer, Johnson and Johnson and Merck.

The same study names the sources feeding those answers: Reuters, Bloomberg, Fierce Pharma and STAT; company filings, Wikipedia and Drugs.com; brand-owned corporate content; and PubMed and the New England Journal of Medicine. Treat it as directional, since it is vendor research with a modest prompt set, but it matches what we see in audits. Your own product site is one input among many, so a plan that only rewrites the brand site leaves most AI citations untouched. That is why digital PR, trade press and reference-site accuracy sit in the same plan as page work.

05

What can a pharma company publish, and what are the regulatory limits?

Everything that informs an AI answer is still promotion or disease awareness under the rules of each market, so the content strategy starts with the regulatory boundaries. In the US, branded content must keep fair balance between benefits and risks and stay within the approved indication. On 9 September 2025 the FDA announced a crackdown on misleading direct-to-consumer ads, sending thousands of warning letters and about 100 cease-and-desist letters according to Orrick's summary, and Foley Hoag notes the FDA named AI-generated promotional content, influencer posts and platform-specific advertising as areas of heightened scrutiny.

Outside the US the room is narrower. In the United Kingdom it is unlawful to promote prescription-only medicines to the public, and the ABPI Code of Practice, administered by the PMCPA, has applied in its 2024 edition since 1 October 2024. In Canada, section C.01.044 of the Food and Drug Regulations limits public advertising of prescription drugs to brand name, proper name, common name, price and quantity. In those markets the useful public work is unbranded disease education, patient support information and accurate reference data, while product detail lives behind HCP-appropriate pages.

  • Branded product pages (US): indication, dosing basics, Important Safety Information and trial results in HTML text, not only in PDFs
  • Unbranded disease pages: symptoms, diagnosis and treatment classes, medically reviewed and dated
  • Access pages: savings programs, eligibility and insurance steps written out, since cost prompts are common
  • HCP pages: mechanism, trial design and outcomes for verified professionals, where local rules require it
  • Corporate and pipeline pages: accurate facts for the press and reference sites that assistants read
06

How do we fit AEO work into MLR review?

We write for the review process rather than around it. Every proposed change comes as a tracked document with its claim, its reference in the label or a publication, and the reason it helps an answer engine, so medical, legal and regulatory reviewers can approve or reject each line. Our founder, Harsh Khubchandani, began his career at ZS, so the split between brand, medical and market access teams is familiar ground.

In practice the answer-first content we produce for pharma is shorter and more literal than consumer marketing copy: a direct sentence that answers the question, the safety context beside it, and a citation. Assistants quote plain statements; reviewers approve plain statements faster. We batch changes so one MLR cycle can clear a set of pages, then rerun the affected prompts once they are live.

07

How are crawlers, structure and wrong answers handled for pharma sites?

Make sure answer engines can read the approved text. Many brand sites put the label, safety information and trial data in PDFs or behind HCP gates that also block crawlers, and some security rules block AI search bots by default. OpenAI's documentation says blocking GPTBot only opts out of training, while sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. Our technical AEO work checks robots.txt, Cloudflare's AI crawler settings and server logs for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot and Googlebot, and confirms the safety text renders in HTML. Schema markup helps engines parse pages but no engine has confirmed it as a citation lever, so we treat it as hygiene.

When an assistant states something wrong, such as an old dosing schedule or an indication you never had, we trace the error to the pages it most likely drew on: an outdated Wikipedia line, a reference site, a press story or your own stale PDF. Our process for wrong AI answers then agrees the correction route with your team, from updating your own pages to contacting reference publishers through your medical information function. Any safety-relevant error goes to your pharmacovigilance and medical teams first.

08

How do we measure AEO for pharma, and what does the first 90 days look like?

We measure accuracy as well as presence. Each month we run a fixed prompt set in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Claude and Google AI Mode and record whether the product is named, whether the description matches the label, which competitors appear and which URL is cited. Our AI visibility tracking method reports citation share; for pharma we add an accuracy score per prompt. Search Console's generative AI performance report and Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance add first-party data, and GA4 separates referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com; we keep that setup within your privacy and consent rules, since health data needs care.

Days 1 to 30 are diagnosis, which reads like an AEO audit with a ranked fix list and a regulatory note on each item. Days 31 to 60 move the approved page fixes through MLR and fix crawler access. Days 61 to 90 cover reference-site corrections, press and medical communications briefs, and a rerun of the full prompt set against the baseline. Teams selling across the US, the United Kingdom, Canada and India usually need a separate prompt set per market, because the permitted content differs.

09

What mistakes do pharma teams make with AI search?

The most common is assuming AI answers come from the brand site. In the prompts we checked, discount sites, publishers and journals held the ground, so fixing only owned pages leaves the biggest sources untouched. The second is publishing the label only as a PDF, which some engines read poorly. The third is trying to win comparison prompts with self-serving pages that would never pass fair balance; a balanced, referenced comparison is both the compliant option and the one assistants tend to repeat, which is the logic behind our comparison pages guidance.

Others repeat across audits: blocking OAI-SearchBot through an inherited firewall rule, letting the patient site, HCP site and corporate site state different facts, and buying a tracking tool without anyone owning the fixes. Google's own guidance says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, so we fix foundations first. If you want benchmarks before talking to anyone, our AEO pricing guide sets out published market ranges.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is AEO for pharma?

It is answer engine optimization applied to medicines: making sure AI assistants describe a drug or therapy accurately and cite reliable sources when patients and prescribers ask about it. It covers owned pages, third-party reference accuracy, crawler access and monthly measurement, all within advertising rules.

Is AEO allowed under FDA advertising rules?

AEO is not a separate category; the content you publish is still subject to the same rules on fair balance, approved indications and safety information. That is why every change we propose goes through your MLR review before it goes live. This is not legal advice, so confirm specifics with your regulatory team.

Why does ChatGPT cite GoodRx or news sites instead of our brand site?

Answers draw on pages that state the requested fact plainly, and for cost and comparison questions those are often discount sites, publishers and health systems. In the top web results we checked on 28 October 2026, no manufacturer site ranked for three common drug prompts. Clear, plain-text pages and third-party accuracy work improve your odds.

What can we do when an AI assistant gets our drug wrong?

Trace the error to the page it most likely came from, correct your own pages first, then work through medical information to fix reference sites and press coverage. Safety-relevant errors should go to your pharmacovigilance and medical teams immediately. We then rerun the prompt monthly to confirm the change.

How does AEO work for prescription drugs in the UK and Canada?

Both markets restrict public promotion of prescription medicines: the UK bans it and applies the ABPI Code, and Canada limits public ads to name, price and quantity. Public AEO work there focuses on unbranded disease education, patient support and accurate reference data rather than branded claims.

Which AI assistants matter most for pharma?

Google AI Overviews reaches the most searchers, since Conductor found it on a quarter of pharmaceutical keywords, while ChatGPT and Perplexity handle longer research questions. We track ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Claude and Google AI Mode because patients and HCPs use different tools.

Should pharma sites block AI crawlers?

Blocking training crawlers such as GPTBot is a policy choice, but blocking search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot keeps your approved text out of ChatGPT search answers. Most brands we review should allow the search crawlers and decide separately on training.

How long does AI search work take for a pharma brand?

The baseline and source map take about a month. Page changes move at the speed of your MLR cycle, and third-party corrections often take a quarter or more, so we judge progress on the 90-day rerun of the prompt set.

Can you promise our drug will be recommended by ChatGPT?

No one can promise a citation, and recommending a prescription medicine is a clinical decision that assistants usually defer to a doctor. Our aim is that when your product is discussed, it is described accurately and the cited sources are ones you trust.

What does AEO for a pharmaceutical company cost?

We quote a fixed price after a free AEO visibility check, based on the number of products, markets and pages involved. Our AEO pricing guide sets out published market ranges if you want a benchmark first.
