Buyer's guide
Best AEO agency: how to choose the right one for your business
The best AEO agency for your business is the one whose method, measurement and honesty fit your situation, and no published ranking can tell you that on its own. This guide is for marketing leads and founders comparing agencies to get their brand cited in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot. It covers how to read best-of lists, the criteria that matter, the red flags, and the questions to ask. We are an AEO agency ourselves, so treat us as one option and apply the same tests to us.

Quick answer
How do I choose the best AEO agency?
To find the best AEO agency for you, judge each candidate on method rather than claims: ask how they check crawler access, which prompt set they will track, how they report citation share and AI referrals, what off-site work they do and what they refuse to do. Avoid any agency that promises citations or rankings.
- Many best-of lists for AEO agencies are published by agencies that rank themselves first.
- Judge agencies on their measurement method and a sample report, not on claimed results.
- Any promise of a citation or placement is a red flag; no one controls AI answers.
- A paid audit is a low-risk way to test an agency before a retainer.

What makes the best AEO agency for your business?
Fit beats fame. The right agency understands the engines your buyers use, the sources those engines cite in your category, and the rules your industry works under, and it can show you how it will measure progress.
A B2B software company needs a team that knows G2, Capterra, comparison pages and documentation. A local service business needs Google Business Profile, Yelp and consistent listings. A healthcare or financial firm needs named expert review and compliance checks built into the workflow. The same agency can be excellent for one and a poor match for another, which is why a single ranked list is a weak guide.
Start by writing down what you need: the engines that matter, the ten prompts you most want to be named in, the markets you sell in and the work your own team can already do. That one page becomes the brief every agency answers, and it makes the rest of this evaluation much faster.
Can you trust lists of the best AEO agencies?
Read them with care. When we checked the top results for "best aeo agencies" on 17 October 2026 using a US search tool, every result was a list, and several were published by agencies that appear in them.
Animalz and NoGood each publish a best-agencies list that places the publisher first, and Omniscient does the same with a clear disclosure. NoGood's list scores agencies on six weighted criteria. Pepper's list takes a different approach: an agency is included only if at least two independent lists it does not own name it. None of this makes the lists useless, but a list written by a participant is a marketing page, and you should weigh it that way.
This pattern is not unique to AEO. In Ahrefs' study of best-of lists, 67.6% of Google searches for best software showed a list where the publisher ranked itself first. Directories have their own model too: Clutch's GEO category states that it may earn a fee for some placements. Use lists and directories to build a long list, then do your own evaluation.
What criteria should you use to compare AEO agencies?
Compare agencies on six things you can verify before signing. The table shows what good looks like for each and how to check it.
Weight the criteria to your situation. A company with a strong content team may care most about technical depth and measurement, while a lesser-known brand may need an agency that is strong on earned mentions and review platforms.
| Criterion | What good looks like | How to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Technical depth | Names crawler tokens such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot; checks Cloudflare settings and server logs | Ask them to review your robots.txt on the first call |
| Measurement | Fixed prompt set, citation share by engine, AI referrals in GA4, Search Console and Bing AI Performance | Ask for a sample monthly report |
| Content method | Answer-first rewrites, comparison pages, original data, dated pages | Ask for a before-and-after example and the reasoning |
| Off-site work | Reviews, communities, press and entity cleanup done genuinely | Ask what they will and will not do on Reddit and review sites |
| Industry fit | Knows the sources and rules in your category | Ask which domains engines cite for your top prompts |
| Honesty | No promised citations; clear about what is uncertain | Read the proposal for guarantee language |
What red flags should you watch for when hiring an AEO agency?
The clearest red flag is a promise. No agency controls what ChatGPT, AI Overviews or Perplexity say, and OpenAI does not publish how ChatGPT ranks sources, so a promised placement is either a misunderstanding or a sales line.
Other warning signs are quieter. Watch for agencies that treat llms.txt or schema as the main lever, when Google says neither is required for generative AI search; reports that show only keyword rankings; vague answers about crawler access; and outdated product names, which suggest the team is not keeping up.
None of these is proof of bad intent on its own, but two or more together should end the conversation.
- Guarantees of citations, rankings or a spot in AI answers.
- Selling llms.txt or schema as a route into ChatGPT or AI Overviews.
- No prompt-set baseline before work starts.
- Plans to post undisclosed Reddit content, buy reviews or seed forums.
- Publishing self-ranking best-of lists on your site at scale.
- Reports with rankings and sessions but no citation or AI referral data.
What questions should you ask an AEO agency before signing?
Ask questions whose answers you can check. Good agencies answer them specifically and quickly; weak ones fall back on generalities.
Listen for whether the answers mention your actual engines, your category's cited sources and your compliance limits. Ask each agency the same questions so you can compare like with like.
- Which prompts will you track, how many, and in which engines?
- How will you check that OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Bingbot can reach our pages?
- What does a monthly report contain? Can we see a sample?
- Which domains do engines cite for our top prompts today?
- What off-site work do you do, and what will you never do?
- Who does the work, and who owns the content, accounts and data at the end?
- What happens if citation share does not move after three months?
Should you hire an AEO agency, use tools or build in-house?
It depends on time and skills more than budget. Many teams combine options: an agency for the audit and first plan, tools for tracking, and in-house staff for ongoing content.
The table compares the three. For published price ranges for each route, see our AEO pricing guide.
| Option | Best when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| AEO agency | You need technical, content and mention work done and lack the hours | Promises, vague reporting, lock-in on accounts |
| Tracking tool only | You have the team and need data on prompts and citations | Data without anyone acting on it |
| In-house team | You have SEO, content and PR skills and an owner with time | Gaps in crawler, CDN and log analysis skills |
| Hybrid | You want an outside baseline, then to run the program yourself | Unclear handover of the prompt set and reports |
What should a good AEO agency proposal include?
A good proposal reads like a plan you could hand to another team. It names the scope, the prompt set, the engines, the reporting dates, the people doing the work and the price, and it states the limits plainly.
Look for a baseline step before any content work, so later reports have something to compare against. Look for technical checks on robots.txt, Cloudflare or other CDN bot settings, rendering and Bing Webmaster Tools verification, since a blocked crawler cancels everything else. Look for named deliverables each month, such as pages rewritten, comparison pages published or review profiles updated, rather than hours. And look for a sentence on what the agency will not do, such as buying reviews or posting undisclosed promotional content, because Google's AI optimization guide warns against inauthentic mentions and consumer rules on fake reviews apply in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and elsewhere.
If a proposal leans on a list of tactics without explaining why each one fits your prompts and category, ask the agency to rank them by expected value. The answer shows how much thought went into your business specifically.
How do you run a fair evaluation of AEO agencies?
Shortlist three, give each the same brief and the same ten prompts, and compare what comes back. A paid audit or short sprint is the most reliable test before a retainer.
Score each response against your criteria table, ask for references you can speak to, and check that the proposal names deliverables, reporting dates and the prompt set. Be wary of client results you cannot verify, and prefer agencies that show method, sample reports and a clear statement of what they will not do. Finally, make sure your company owns the accounts, prompt set and content from day one, so you can change agency without starting over.
Where does AEO Services Agency fit among your options?
We are one option, and we would rather you choose well than choose us. AEO Services Agency is the AEO and GEO practice of Greenwolf Tech Labs, working remotely with brands in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, the UAE and Singapore.
Our approach is the one this guide recommends checking for. Every engagement is fixed-price after a free AEO visibility check, we measure a fixed prompt set before and after changes, and we fix SEO foundations and crawler access before answer-specific work. We do not promise citations, buy mentions or sell llms.txt as a lever. If an audit alone is enough for your team, we say so.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best AEO agency?
There is no single best AEO agency for every business. The right choice depends on your engines, category, compliance needs and in-house skills. Compare agencies on technical depth, measurement method, content approach, off-site work, industry fit and honesty, using a paid audit as a test.
Can an AEO agency guarantee my brand appears in ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI does not publish how ChatGPT ranks sources, answers vary between runs, and no one can promise a citation. A good agency improves the odds through access, content and mention work and reports citation share against a fixed prompt set.
What should an AEO agency report each month?
Results for a fixed prompt set across the engines you care about, including mentions, citations and accuracy; citation share where available, such as Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance; Search Console's generative AI report; AI referral sessions and conversions in GA4; and a log of changes shipped.
Are best AEO agency lists reliable?
Treat them as a starting point. Several are published by agencies that rank themselves first, and some directories say they may earn fees for placements. Lists with a stated inclusion method, such as requiring mentions on independent lists, are more useful.
How long should I give an AEO agency before judging results?
Technical fixes should be done within the first weeks, and you should see a baseline and a plan in the first month. Content and mention work usually shows across several months, so review the citation share trend at about three months.
