Gemini SEO: how to get your brand named and cited by Google Gemini
Gemini SEO is the work of getting your pages and your brand used, named and linked when Google Gemini answers a buyer's question, in the Gemini app and in the AI Overviews and AI Mode answers that Gemini models power inside Google Search. It is mostly good Google SEO, plus one setting most guides never mention: Google-Extended, the robots.txt token that decides whether the Gemini app may ground its answers in your content. This guide is for marketing leads deciding whether to do the work in-house or hire help.

Quick answer
What is Gemini SEO and how do you rank in Gemini?
Gemini SEO means earning citations and brand mentions in Google Gemini's answers. To rank in Gemini, get key pages indexed and snippet-eligible in Google, allow Google-Extended if you want Gemini app grounding, write answer-first pages, keep brand facts consistent, earn mentions on sources Gemini already cites, and track a fixed prompt set monthly.
- Gemini is three surfaces: the Gemini app, AI Overviews and AI Mode. Each is controlled and measured differently.
- Blocking Google-Extended keeps Search visibility but removes your content from Gemini app grounding.
- Google says optimizing for its generative AI search is still SEO: indexing, snippets and helpful pages come first.
- Measure with a fixed prompt set, Search Console's generative AI report and gemini.google.com referrals in GA4.
What is Gemini SEO, and which Gemini surfaces does it cover?
Gemini SEO covers every place a Gemini model writes an answer that could name or link your brand. In practice that is three surfaces, and buyers lose time when an agency treats them as one.
The Gemini app (gemini.google.com and the mobile apps) is a standalone assistant. Google said in August 2026, as reported by iPhone in Canada, that the app had passed 1 billion monthly users. Inside Google Search, Gemini models also write Google AI Overviews and the follow-up conversations in AI Mode, which share Google's index and crawler with ordinary search results.
The audience is large enough to plan for separately. Similarweb data reported by OfficeChai on 12 October 2026 put Gemini at 25.0% of worldwide generative AI website traffic in September 2026, against 56.4% for ChatGPT. That makes Gemini the second assistant to plan for alongside ChatGPT SEO work, and the one most tied to how your site already performs in Google Search.
| Surface | Where buyers see it | What fetches your pages | Your control | How you measure it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini app | gemini.google.com, Android and iOS apps | Google's existing crawlers; grounding uses the Search index | Google-Extended token in robots.txt | Prompt runs; gemini.google.com referrals in GA4 |
| AI Overviews | Top of Google results | Googlebot | Indexing and snippet controls | Search Console generative AI report |
| AI Mode | Google Search AI Mode tab and follow-ups | Googlebot | Indexing and snippet controls | Search Console generative AI report; prompt runs |
How does Gemini choose which sources to cite?
Gemini cites what Google's index already trusts for the question, so the starting point is ordinary Google visibility. Google's crawler documentation describes grounding in Gemini Apps as providing content from the Google Search index to the model at prompt time to improve factuality and relevancy.
For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google's AI features documentation says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, with no additional technical requirements. Both features may use query fan-out, running several related searches across subtopics before choosing supporting links. A page that answers one narrow subtopic clearly can be cited even when it does not rank first for the head term.
Not every Gemini answer is grounded in fresh search results. When the model answers from what it learned in training, your brand appears only if it was described accurately and often across the web. That is the territory of LLM SEO: consistent facts on your site, profiles and third-party coverage, so the model's background knowledge matches what you sell.
Is your robots.txt or Cloudflare setup hiding you from the Gemini app?
Check this first, because it is the one Gemini-specific setting that can remove you from Gemini app answers while your Google rankings look fine. Google's documentation says Google-Extended is a standalone product token that controls whether content Google crawls may be used for training future Gemini models and for grounding in Gemini Apps and Grounding with Google Search on Vertex AI.
The same page says Google-Extended does not affect inclusion in Google Search and is not a ranking signal, and that it has no separate user agent: crawling is done by existing Google crawlers and the token works only as a robots.txt control. AI Overviews and AI Mode rely on Googlebot, so a Google-Extended block leaves them untouched.
Many sites block Google-Extended without a decision being made. Cloudflare changed its default in July 2025 to block AI crawlers unless they pay, and its managed robots.txt can disallow GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended and CCBot in one switch. Open your live robots.txt, search for Google-Extended, and record who chose the current setting and why. Our technical AEO reviews start with exactly this check, alongside AI crawler access for the other engines.
| Your goal | Google-Extended | Googlebot | Effect on Gemini |
|---|---|---|---|
| Be cited everywhere Gemini answers | Allow | Allow | Eligible for Gemini app grounding, AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| Keep content out of Gemini training and app answers | Disallow | Allow | Still eligible for AI Overviews and AI Mode; not used to ground Gemini app answers |
| Stay out of all Google AI answers | Disallow | Use snippet controls on chosen pages | Restricting snippets also limits normal search snippets, so test on a few pages first |
How do you rank in Gemini answers?
Ranking in Gemini follows Google's own advice: Google's AI optimization guide, updated in July 2026, says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, with no special files, markup or Markdown needed. What changes is which pages you prioritize and how you write them.
Start with the pages your buyers' prompts hit: pricing, comparison, alternatives, category and how-to pages. Write answer-first content, with each section opening on a direct one or two sentence answer under a heading phrased as the question. Put comparisons in tables, name the source of every figure, and show a last-updated date. Gemini quotes passages, so each section should make sense on its own.
Keep entity facts identical everywhere. Your name, products, locations and leadership should match across the site, Organization schema with sameAs links, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile and industry directories. Google says schema markup is not required for generative AI search, so treat it as a consistency tool rather than a citation lever, and skip vendors who sell it as the main fix. The same goes for llms.txt, which no major engine has confirmed using.
Finally, earn mentions on the pages Gemini already cites for your category. Google advises against inauthentic mentions, so this means accurate listings, real reviews and digital PR built on original data, not seeded posts.
Which sources does Gemini lean on in your category?
It varies by industry, which is why a generic Gemini playbook underperforms. Run your own buyer prompts and log the cited domains before deciding where to spend.
Published studies show how different the mix can be. Temso's Q3 2026 study of 111,279 citations in accounting found clutch.co in the top five sources for both AI Mode and Gemini. Amsive's category research found uhc.com took 11.47% of Gemini's citations for health insurance prompts: an insurer's own site, not a publisher or directory. In the first case the work is directories and reviews; in the second it is the brand's own pages.
For B2B SaaS that usually means G2, Capterra and editorial best-of lists; for ecommerce brands, product pages, Merchant Center data and reviews; for local businesses, Google Business Profile and local directories. Retailers should also note that Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, announced in January 2026, powers checkout inside AI Mode and Gemini while the retailer stays the seller, so clean product data now feeds a purchase path as well as an answer.
How do you measure Gemini visibility?
Measure each surface with the source built for it, against a baseline taken before any changes. Without a baseline, no claim of progress can be checked.
Write 25 to 100 buyer prompts by topic and intent, save them, and run each one in the Gemini app, in AI Overviews and in AI Mode. Log whether your brand is named, which of your URLs are cited and which competitors appear. Answers vary between runs, so sample each prompt more than once and read monthly trends rather than single results. That gives you a citation share you can compare month to month.
For Google Search surfaces, Google added generative AI performance reports to Search Console in June 2026, and AI feature traffic also counts in the Web search type. For the Gemini app, set up a GA4 segment for referrals from gemini.google.com. Paid AEO tools such as Ahrefs Brand Radar track Gemini alongside other engines and save time on larger prompt sets; our AI visibility tracking service runs the same method monthly.
What does a 90-day Gemini plan look like?
Fix access in the first weeks, rewrite and build in the middle, and judge results on trends at the end. Engines refresh at different speeds, so read results by month, not by day.
- Days 1 to 15: baseline the prompt set in all three surfaces; check robots.txt, Cloudflare and server logs; confirm key pages are indexed and snippet-eligible in Search Console.
- Days 15 to 45: rewrite the five to ten pages your prompts hit most, answer-first, with tables and sources; align Organization schema and profiles.
- Days 30 to 75: close gaps in the third-party sources Gemini cites for your category: directory listings, review profiles, comparison pages and coverage of original data.
- Days 60 to 90: re-run the prompt set, compare citation share and gemini.google.com referrals against the baseline, and reprioritize from what moved.
Should you hire a Gemini SEO agency?
Hire help when you lack the time or skills to run the access checks, rewrites and mention work above; keep it in-house when your SEO team already owns Google visibility and only needs the Gemini-specific additions. A Gemini SEO agency should be able to show its prompt set, its measurement method and its view on Google-Extended in the first call.
Do not buy a separate Gemini program if your pages are not indexed in Google yet, if you have no answer-first content on pricing and comparisons, or if your buyers do not use AI assistants to research your category. Fix SEO basics first. Be wary of anyone promising positions in Gemini, quoting case-study lifts without baselines, or selling schema and llms.txt as the main lever. No one can promise a citation.
Gemini work usually belongs inside a wider program, because the same pages and mentions serve Perplexity SEO, Copilot and ChatGPT. For market rates, see our guide to what AEO costs. As an AEO agency, we start every engagement with a free AEO visibility check, quote a fixed price for the work, and measure the same prompt set before and after changes, so you can verify what moved.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is Gemini SEO different from Google SEO?
Mostly no. Google says optimizing for its generative AI search is still SEO, and AI Overviews and AI Mode only need pages to be indexed and snippet-eligible. The Gemini-specific parts are the Google-Extended setting for Gemini app grounding, answer-first page structure and tracking citations by prompt rather than by keyword.
Does blocking Google-Extended hurt my Google rankings?
No. Google states that Google-Extended does not affect inclusion in Google Search and is not a ranking signal. It does stop your content being used to ground answers in the Gemini app and to train future Gemini models, so block it only if that trade-off is deliberate.
How do I get my business recommended by Gemini?
Make sure Google can index your key pages, allow Google-Extended, and publish clear answers to the questions buyers ask about your category. Then keep your brand facts consistent across your site and profiles, and earn genuine reviews and listings on the sources Gemini already cites for your prompts.
How long does it take to show up in Gemini answers?
Access and indexing fixes can take effect within weeks, once Google recrawls the pages. Content and mention work usually needs two to three monthly measurement cycles before trends are readable, because answers vary between runs and sources change over time.
Can I see Gemini traffic in Google Analytics?
Yes, for the Gemini app. Visits from links in Gemini app answers arrive as referrals from gemini.google.com, so create a GA4 segment for that source. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in Search Console under the Web search type and in its generative AI report.
Does schema markup help with Gemini?
Not directly as a citation lever. Google says structured data is not required for generative AI search and there is no special markup to add. Accurate Organization and product schema still helps keep your brand facts consistent, which is why it stays on the checklist.
How much does Gemini SEO cost?
It depends on how many pages need rewriting, how much mention work your category needs and whether you want ongoing tracking. Our AEO pricing guide sets out market rates for audits, sprints and retainers; we quote a fixed price after a free AEO visibility check.
